Я не плачу 2019
Description: “Stroma's funeral” or “grandmother” is the name of the three-day rite, which is held each year in the village of Shutilovo, Nizhny Novgorod region. In its spirit, it is the folk carnival, about which Mikhail Bakhtin and Francois Rabelais wrote: a change of appearance, general merriment, plenty of food, drink, indecent words and deeds. During this minigame of death and burial, there is no zone for genuine grief. But when things are going awry in the non-holiday life of a Russian village, it is very hard not to cry.

Ruta del Jaca #

Released 11/5/2009

Description: In the late 1980's, during Peru's bloody internal conflict, an American couple traveled through the countryside looking for alternative healers to treat the woman's terminal illness. On that fateful trip, they vanished completely. At the time, local authorities claimed they had been kidnapped and killed by communist insurgents of the Shining Path movement. 20 years later, their son retraces their steps in an intriguing and sometime bizarre trip to visit Shamans in Andean remote villages as well as deep in the Amazon jungle. Matt is looking for folks that might have known his parents, and undergoes some of the same treatments his mother had received. Ruta del Jaca is a kaleidoscopic movie that blurs the distinction between documentary and fiction. The spectacular beauty of the Peruvian countryside is splashed throughout the feature. A unique role is reserved for the immensely famous "Folklor" singer Sonia Morales.

Sonic Mirror #

Released 4/25/2008

Description: The multi-award-winning Finnish documentarian Mika Kaurismäki, brother of Aki Kaurismäki (The Boy Without a Past), helms the nonfiction work Sonic Mirror -- a protracted exploration of rhythm as one of life's driving forces. Revered drummer Billy Cobham serves as host, taking the audience on a long musical adventure around the globe and through a myriad of musical categories and styles. Cobham, Kaurismäki, and co. segue from Western concert halls and stages to the melody of African tribes performed by Brazilian road kids to the distinct melody of autistic patients. Along the way, the filmmakers raise serious questions about the function of melody as an identifying force, a means of communication, and an emotional release; they also probe the enduring connections between group awareness and self-awareness. The movie ultimately builds to a hugely affirming and cathartic expression of melody as collective expression that unifies its performers in spirit.

Denkend aan Holland #

Released 9/25/2009

Description: When you look at a river, what do you see? Remembering Holland by Jan Wouter van Reijen carries the viewer through the basin of the River Waal, past painters, sculptors and poets. Van Reijen follows the whole course of the river, from the German border to the North Sea, and creates portraits of different artists who have taken the riverine landscape as their theme. Every and each one of them sings the river’s praises in his or her own way, from extremely realistic to abstract. At each spot along the way, and every day anew, the river landscape changes: we see the water dark and colorful, glistening in late and early light, in morning dew and by moonlight, in clouds of mist and the snows of winter. Yet the water brings more than beauty alone. The flooding of the forelands and the reinforcement of the dykes in 1995 remind us of the eternal struggle of the Dutch vs the rising water. See it and be borne along on a voyage of the imagination.

An Independent Mind #

But does the same apply to Holocaust denier David Irving or the Basque rock group Soziedad Alkoholika that ridicules victims of ETA violence?

Description: The movie begins with a long, static shot of the sun rising above the hills near the Roma village of Hetea in Romania. We only hear the sounds of birds, including a cuckoo. In the distance, a satellite dish figures on a roof. Slowly, the everyday routine begins. We see more and more activity, like the harnessing of a horse to a cart, loading stripped tree trunks, collecting water from a pipe, testing soccer and a woman getting punished with a severe slap on her arm. These scenes are mostly captured from a distance. Then, towards noon, the fat is in the fire. The camera looks for the villagers who argue with every another and registers how an old boy paces up and down the street. Because the photos have not been subtitled (intentionally), the meaning of the quarrel remains unclear. The movie does not mention any names or another facts, either. The absence of this context makes this documentary into a picturesque impression.
