Description d'un combat #

Released 6/30/1960

Description: Working primarily in the arena of nonfiction, Marker rejected conventional narrative techniques, instead staking out a deeply political terrain defined by the test of still images, atmospheric soundtracks, and literate commentary. In Description d’un Combat, Marker’s idiosyncratic style, combining zone footage with archival material, builds a complex and private portrayal. Israel’s demography is explored, from the kibbutzim to the Arab minorities, the orthodox Jews, and the tourists. The “battle” of the game does not refer to the tank-and-artillery variety, but to the inner struggle of Israeli citizens to adapt to a fresh view of themselves, in a fresh country.

The Lifestyle #

Released 4/17/1999

Description: Forget martinis and Austin Powers. Most of them are simply looking to break out of their conventional, well-ordered lives by adopting "the lifestyle." Birds and bees may not do it, but we learn that monkeys do -- as well as 3 million Americans.

Brazil: An Inconvenient History #

Astonishingly Brazil, a Portuguese colony, received ten-times more African slaves than the numbers transported to North America. This programme looks at those estimated 4 million folks with whose blood, sweat and tears Brazil was built. Without them none of Brazil’s present-day success and appeal would exist. Using contemporary testimonies, this movie takes a difficult look at Brazil s dark history through the eyes of those slaves. They lived in squalid conditions on remote plantations or in teeming towns harboring fatal diseases. Most Africans survived only seven years in this ‘New World’.
