Earl Carroll Vanities #

Released 4/5/1945

Description: Broadway producer Earl Carroll was a Ziegfeld-like entrepreneur who staged lavish revues featuring pretty young ladies. Carroll's annual "Vanities" provided storyline material for three Hollywood films: Murder at the Vanities (34), A Night at Earl Carroll's (40) and Earl Carroll Vanities (45). This last movie was produced by Republic Pictures, a bread-and-butter studio specializing in Westerns and serials; Republic had made musicals before, but several of them were expensive enough to let for lavish production numbers. Earl Carroll Vanities is likewise rather threadbare, though some of the individual musical highlights aren't bad. The plot, such as it is, concerns financially strapped nightclub owner Eve Arden, who finagles Earl Carroll into staging one of his revues at her club.

I'll Get By #

Released 10/2/1950

Description: I'll Receive By is an modernized makeover of the 1940 20th Century-Fox musical Tin Pan Alley. William Lundigan and Dennis Day enjoy William Spencer and Freddie Lee respectively, successful song publishers who create hits out of such numbers as "I Got a Gal in Kalamazoo", "Deep in the Heart of Texas", "You Create Me Feel So Young", "There Will Never Be Other You", and another favorites (the rights to all of these songs were conveniently held by 20th Century-Fox). The partnership has some difficult times, especially during the feud between ASCAP and the radio networks, when only public-domain songs like "I Dream of Jeannie" were permitted to be broadcast.

I Dream Too Much #

Released 11/29/1935

Description: If Columbia should create an acceptable film star out of opera-diva Grace Moore, then RKO Radio should do the same with Lily Pons. At least that was producer Pandro S. Berman's reasoning when he cast Pons in the 1935 musical romance I Dream too Much. The actress plays Annette, a rural French musical student who marries struggling American composer Jonathan (Henry Fonda). Possessed of a splendid singing voice, our heroine rises to fame on the opera stage, while terrible Jonathan continues struggling, helping himself as a tour guide. Annette eventually saves her marriage by transforming her husband's "masterpiece," a rather turgid modernistic opera, into a light-hearted musical comedy. Lucille Ball, who'd soon co-star with Henry Fonda in The Large Road and Yours, Mine and Ours, has a funny minor role as a gum-snapping tourist. Though Lily Pons was at least 10 years older than Fonda, they create an pretty and believable screen couple, adding credibility to this somewhat contrived yarn

Womb Reviews:

Womb is an perfect drama that is unfortunately marketed the wrong way.If your first impression of the movie is that its an Erotic drama on incest, you couldn't be further from the truth. The premise itself could be a guideline for whether or not you could watch this film."After a tragic accident, a girl decides to clone her lover, and raise him from infancy to adult." The less you know about Womb, the better the experience will be. Suffice to say, its an extremely well made, and honest drama about not being able to allow go, and the consequences that follow. The storyline centers around Tommy and Rebecca. After the accident, Rebecca makes the controversial decision to clone Tommy to raise him as a child. Why? To receive back her lover? To raise the kid she never had? The movie never spoon feeds us, and we're left with Eva Greens brilliant performance to see Rebecca unravel. We see her care about the Tommy's clone, and genuinely wants to be a nice mother, but there's an underlying foreboding with the chance of incest. Rebecca struggles to hold her feelings to being a mother, but there's obvious jealously when girls come into Tommy's life, and thats the main conflict of the film.Certainly, this taboo chance is the main drive of the second half of the film, but its much more than that.Womb is brilliant because of how well its crafted. There is an isolation to the film, landscapes and vistas are limited to long stretches of seas and beaches.Music is sparse too, there's a haunting recurring theme that plays during decades, and emphasizes the long time span of the story.Dialogue is minimum , and the movie never lingers on a certain time period.Yet we miss nothing. Womb focuses not on the conversations and events, but rather the emotions the characters go through. What we are left with is a deep morality love storyline that transcends decades.Regardless of how you feel about the inevitable outcome, the struggles presented on screen is one of the more complex modern love stories. Its not about Lust, but of how blind we can receive in our desires to receive our loved ones back. Its not for everyone though, due to the slow paced nature of the film, the more you give yourself to the film, the more you will get.Its also not exactly the happiest movie made. The depressive tone of the movie may be too much for some, but it stays real to itself, and benefits greatly from it.This paired with the taboo topics material, led with questionable marketing, will probably scare off people, which is a shame, because this is far from the pretentious love storyline folks seem to think it is.See it if you can, its definitely a hauntingly pretty movie that makes you think long after the credits roll.P.S, this is my first true review, allow me know what you guys think! THANKS!

Movies with lingering shots of a beach or a face or a street to me can sometimes come off as pretentious dribble, not the situation with Womb, I found this film to be absolutely stunning. There's no another word for it, some folks would easy search this film to be boring due to the extremely slow pace and lack of dialogue, but in my opinion that all just adds to the atmosphere that the director was trying to create. There is no method at all to say what year this movie is set but I'm guessing it would be in the not too distant future, let's face it, the advances in science these days it's not too long before human cloning will be a part of our society. A lot of things I've heard about Womb quite often compare it to Birth, which is a cute nice comparison I think, both movies have a lot of similarities. I couldn't support but pick up vibes from other movie Never Allow Me Go, the controversial topics matter is similar, the underlying sci-fi element, the moral question the viewer faces and the stillness of both movies are very much the same.Eva Green is unbelievable to watch, she gives such a wonderfully restrained performance that's it's surprising she didn't receive noticed more for her role. Ever since I saw the terrific Cracks a several years ago I look forward to seeing what edgy role she decides to take on next, Matt Smith, who I'm not so familiar with also does a nice job. The kids at the beginning of the movie deserve a mention too, it seems as though kid actors are just getting better and better as time goes on.Certainly not a movie for everyone, but for folks who like a bit of a discussion after a movie it's perfect.LOVED IT!!!

At one mission in the movie there's a lingering shot of a snail, as if an obvious metaphor that Womb gestates ever so slowly in its story, covering decades of its characters' lives, and does so in such a bleak and loving fashion that it provides you breathing zone that sets you thinking in every scene, akin to observing the quietest child in class who turns out to be the most explosive. If you've read the synopsis by actually you'd know this movie deals with the problems associated with cloning, and finds kindred spirits with movies such as Jonathan Glazer's Birth and especially Tag Romanek's Never Allow Me Go.Hungarian writer-director Benedek Fliegauf tackles his first English language movie with Womb, exploring an intense underlying love storyline that's treated and shot with Zen minimalist principles vs the hauntingly pretty backdrop of Sylt and another equally nice landscapes in and around Hamburg. Technical strengths in presenting this movie cannot be ignored, such as how patiently quiet the narrative is with tiny dialogue, let emotions to overwhelm on screen, with sound intricately designed around emotions of frustration, anger and fear. Simply put, this is one adventure spanning lifetimes that you'd have to launch your heart out to, checking that nagging thought process about the plausibleness of the storyline at the door, otherwise you'll search yourself deeply muddled given that this in essence is like a science fiction fantasy. It's a storyline about attraction, and how inexplicable it can sometimes be, as if of a chemical nature that draws one's attention to another, and how we are thought to be wired up to be attracted to a certain type, profile, or genetic create up, with the latter of course testing a large role in this movie since it involves the cloning of a human being, and the existential exploration of whether a clone can ever be the same as its original, or the degree it is so similar. It raises interesting arguments about that of nature vs nurture, since one's personality and values are catalyzed by the growing up process, and while one can be grown from a petri dish, happenings that shape one's hero are external and cannot be controlled, somehow. But Womb pushes that boundary a tiny bit further. What if it involves a surrogate mother, won't her 9 months pregnancy in carrying the foetus enjoy a part, and like the movie had shown, care had been taken to grow the topics in a fairly controlled environment. Rebecca (Eva Green) and Tommy (Matt Smith) are on the cusp of a budding romantic relationship, where their years apart since young didn't even seem to damper their powerful emotions toward every other, only for a sudden street accident to cruelly snatch one away from the other. In what would be a controversial move, Rebecca enrolls to have herself impregnated and becoming the surrogate mother of Tommy's clone, for the selfish belief that in doing so will let Tommy to live again, much to the disappointment and shock of Tommy's mother, who chose to depart rather than to see a mirror of her lost kid in other human being, actually brought up by other woman. It's the ultimate possessive love story, where one can actually boast of having being there right from the begin of a lover's life, nurturing him from a toddler to a young adult, to the mission where one last left off. In most love stories, the feel nice factor post tragedy is to explore one expecting the kid of a lover actually deceased, but in Womb and to a degree of morbidity, it's actually the expecting of the lover himself that raises plenty of alarm bells, especially when sexual attraction comes into play, and clearly with the ulterior motive and desire to wish to somehow break through powerful taboos when opportune, to continue where the lovers last left off. But with Tommy 2 hooking up with a fresh found girlfriend in Monica (Hannah Murray), with the last act dealing with this three-way relationship, with the audience firmly in the know of how conflicted Rebecca gotta have felt. Here's where Eva Green shines in testing a hopeful teenager to a girl who's confused, jealous and probably with a tinge of being jilted, unable to tell the truth which she had hidden so well for years. Fanatics of Dr Who will probably lap at the possibility of watching their character in Matt Smith enjoy the Tommy role, being a youth slash down before his prime, then in his second role as the relatively immature teenager who has yet to know what's in shop for him when unexpected happenings receive set in motion.-So what got the censors here hot and massive and to charge this with the highest rating possible, outside of an outright ban, is how there's a pervasive feeling of sexual attraction that never goes away, when Tommy 2 begins to appear in Rebecca's life. Granted that a mother naturally shows unconditional love toward her child, this one has a very explicit tip of intent that provokes. Take up the challenge with this unconventional love story, and see if you'd squirm when you receive past the nice visuals to reach its controversial, and to some, shocking, core,
