Description: John Waiko is the first Papua Fresh Guinea boy to graduate with a PhD and be appointed a professor. He returns to the Binandere guild and his tiny village of Tabara in the Northern Province of PNG. Once there, he has to organise a celebration for his achievements with his family’s help. Since he has been away for most of his life, he has no recognised wealth in the village (the pigs used for gift giving), nor a network of supporters or knowledge of the preparation and rituals for having such a celebration. He wants the happening to happen quickly but that’s not the method it works in Tabara. Boy without pigs focuses on the antagonism aroused by the clash between traditional customs and Western values in this remote PNG community.

China Strikes Back #

Description: In 1936 and 1937 Harry Dunham shot "several hundred feet of film," being the first cameraman to penetrate into the Shensi region and receive footage of the Communist forces in China. He smuggled his movie out and placed it in the hands of Frontier Films. Leyda, Lerner, Meyers and Maddow (they had to test pseudonyms) spent four months preparing the movie for publication. In that time, the Chinese case altered to such an extent that Frontier had to change the scenario few times in order to hold up with events...the producers had to create a satisfied change in the theme of China Strikes Back. It was no longer a movie showing the Chinese folks moving toward unity. It became a pictorial history revealing the how and why behind a realized unity. (IMDb)

Members of this group included writers Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg. a trinity that would ultimately influence the works of others during that era, including the "hippie" movement of the '60s. In this 55-minute video narrated by Allen Ginsberg, members of the Beat Generation (including the aforementioned Burroughs, Anne Waldman, Peter Orlovsky, Amiri Baraka, Diane Di Prima, and Timothy Leary) are reunited at Naropa University in Boulder, CO during the late 1970's to share their works and influence a fresh generation of young American bohemians.
