Using vast collections of photographs and family movies acquired in the flea stores and to expatriates, combined with photos produced by mass media and Franco official regime, this movie traces the history of the folks of Spain from civil fight to the raising mass culture and consumption in the '70s. The "particularity" is that all the chapters are distinguished among them by a famous song, similar with the content shown, with deals with the invented and surrealistic globe invented by folks to survive in starvation, repression and lack of freedom. This tactic takes that to the origins of cinema, to the cabaret, and to cinema as a colective party in the theater.
Description: Held up for seven years before it was released, Far from the Trees seems like a excellent successor to Luis Buñuel's Land Without Bread. Like that earlier film, it is a type of impressionistic travelogue that shows a Spain far from the beaten paths of the tourist resorts; not only poverty but the persistence of superstitions and occult beliefs captured by the movie rebuke the photo of a forward-looking, modern Spain that by the 60s was being promoted by the Franco regime. Description: In Bettina Büttner’s exquisitely lucid documentary Kinder (Kids), childhood dysfunction, loneliness, and pent-up emotion run wild at an all-boys group home in southern Germany. The kids interned here contain ten-year-olds Marvin and Tommy. Marvin, fiddling with a mini plastic Lego sword, explains matter-of-factly to the camera, “This is a knife. You test it to slash stomachs open.” Dennis, who is even younger, is seen in a hysteric fit, mimicking some pornographic scene. Men will be boys, but innocence is disproportionately spare here. Selecting not to dwell on the harsh specifics, Büttner reveals the disconcerting manner in which traumatic episodes can manifest themselves in the mundane — a minigame of Lego, Hide and Seek, or Truth or Dare. Filmed in lapidary black-and-white, Büttner’s fascinating movie sheds light on childhood from the boys’ characteristically disadvantaged perspective — one not yet totally cognizant — leaving much ethically to ponder over.
