Description: The BQE is a mixed-media artistic exploration of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway of Fresh York Town by Sufjan Stevens. A cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Hula-Hoop, and commissioned by Brooklyn Academy of Music, it was originally performed in the Howard Gilman Opera House in celebration of the 25th anniversary Next Wave Festival in October of 2007.

Based on the historical happenings of the time of the French Revolution, this storyline of a community of Carmelite nuns who go to the guillotine rather than renounce their calling can be received in many ways. Poulenc's warmly melodic and lyrical score is wholly dramatic and gripping, and Dame Joan Sutherland, recreating the role she sang at the opera's British premiere in 1958, sings the second prioress with commanding moderation.
