In Levantados do Chão, a philharmonic band traverses an abandoned hotel in the Azores, and the emptiness left by the ruins thus refers to a past that is still show and prevalent.

Sob Céus Estranhos #

Released 1/1/2002

Description: During the Second Globe War, Lisbon was a corridor for refugees going from Hitler's occupied spaces to America. This movie says two parallel stories about exile and accommodation. Through a narrated memoir and photographs, the tale of a German Jewish family that decided to stay in Portugal is recounted. The larger, more sociological acc of the others who used Lisbon's escape route is skillfully said as well, using beautifully shot historic footage and written memoirs by some of the era's leading intellectuals, including Heinrich Mann and Alfred Döblin. This movie evokes a desperate, intensely romantic period of exile, despair, and, ultimately, freedom.

Description: In the Summer of 2004, I traveled across Portugal to shoot my project: a road-movie about a country that can be crossed in six hours from north to south and just one hour and a half from east to west. The landscape I passed through was the post-Euro 2004 Portugal, with the provisional government of Santana Lopes about to take office. It is a country that still seems like the concept we all have of "our homeland", but which now no longer corresponds to reality and is becoming almost unrecognizable, as in a postcard.

Description: One journalist described it as a possibility "to see justice catch up with evil." On November 20, 1945, the twenty-two surviving representatives of the Nazi elite stood before an international military tribunal at the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany; they were charged with the systematic murder of millions of people. The ensuing trial pitted U.S. chief prosecutor and Supreme Court judge Robert Jackson vs Hermann Göring, the former head of the Nazi air force, whom Adolf Hitler had once called to be his successor. Jackson hoped that the trial would create a statement that crimes vs humanity would never again go unpunished. Proving the guilt of the defendants, however, was more hard than Jackson anticipated. This American Experience production draws upon rare archival material and eyewitness accounts to recreate the dramatic tribunal that defines trial procedure for state criminals to this day.

Welcome to Kutsher's: The Last Catskills Resort Reviews:

This is a well-researched documentary by Ian Rosenberg (the director, not to be confused with Ian Rosenberg jewellery maker) and his wife Caroline, which charts the history of the Jewish Catskills resorts and the actual experiences at the last ever resort, Kutsher's. It looks at the Jewish American vacation experience, which changed from having no vacation at all to visiting the luxury hotels in the Catskills that provided everything you should ever need.It provides perfect first-hand information, such as the fact that the dining rooms were semi-Kosher – Matzo Ball soup was now labelled Consommé Ontos. The movie also looks at the repercussions of national and international travel becoming easier, as the Catskills became less famous as a vacation resort destination. The resorts remain famous in the public imagination, though, with the resorts inspiring movies such as Dirty Dancing. The documentary contains snippets of notification from different characters in Kutsher's history, including Helen Kutsher (one of the original Kutshers), and her son Tag (who is actually the Chief Executive Officer of the resort). You can say that the movie has had a lot of love place into it by Ian Rosenberg, with the documentary taking 5 years to make. It is especially poignant, as it was Kutsher's 100th anniversary when filming started in 2007. Unfortunately, its future looks uncertain, but Rosenberg has made a documentary that will hold the memory of the Catskill resorts alive forever.

I looked forward to the day that this terrific documentary would be released. When it was accessible on the iTunes store, I instantly rented it. The film is both a history lesson and a trip down memory lane. I was fortunate to be a guest at Kutsher's, and to work at the resort for a short time. My grandparents, who worked difficult to earn a living while living in a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, would travel by bus to Monticello to spent time as guests at Kutsher's. On a number of occasions, I was fortunate enough to be asked to join them. I can remember the excitement I felt when our taxi pulled up to the main entrance to view the huge illuminated Kutsher's sign shinning brightly! This movie brings back so many nice memories of the resort, and the fun that we had. The footage of the pool area, folks sitting around the lake, the nightly shows, the happenings of every day, and the unbelievable food, were just some of the nice memories that were brought back to life. I should picture my grandparents taking advantage of all that Kutsher's had to offer. Since both of my grandparents have passed away, I felt a tons of emotions ranging from the shedding of a tear to smiling. The interviews with family members and the staff at Kutsher's provided more of a behind the scenes look at the resort, which was both informative and interesting. The resort was truly a family business.Times do change, and the movie talks about the decline of a resort was no longer able to remain open. The tearing down of this historic resort was hard to watch, however, it was a important part of the documentary. Thanks to the movie makers for doing some thorough research, and for providing a documentary that anyone who has spent time at Kutsher's will thoroughly enjoy!

I found this documentary to be rather ho-hum about a zone that in the hey-day had so much spectacle, sparkle, vim, vip, and vigor. I was left disappointed as they should have talked about so much more yet they didn't. I am intrigued though as to what has been built on the property now...
