Weed Reviews:

Weed (1972)** (out of 4) Before making a career with porn movies, director Alex de Renzy made few documentary movies with this one here taking a look at that green plant. Of course, the game gave that away, didn't it? This documentary, in its uncut form, runs 112-minutes and there's no question that de Renzy wanted to give you all sorts of notification on the topics but for the life of me I didn't see the need for this thing to run so long. The ver released by Something Weird Video is missing fifteen-minutes and I can't support but think that would be preferred to this one in regards to entertaining. As I said, I can appreciate there being a lot of notification here. Not only do we receive interviews with potheads but we also hear from the another side of the issues. We receive interviews with cops, folks vs the legalization of weed and those who feel that it would support making it legal. We even receive a segment where the director travels to Vietnam during the fight to interview our units about grass! This leads to more notification about weed and its prices throughout the world.Again, everything you'd wish to know about weed is here but at the same time the movie is just rather lifeless and not all that interesting. I doubt even potheads would search this all that entertaining just because of how long it drags on plus the fact that a lot of notification repeats itself.

Alex de Renzy interviews folks in different countries with different occupations on the test of marijuana, legal and otherwise. We begin out right here in the U.S., at hearing, with the pros and cons of legalized pot. Then, we take ride through the bible belt, interviewing "Steve", who works for the Missouri Conservation Department, for a discussion on how wild plants deliever ground cover and nesting for birds, probably not the strongest argument. de Renzy does create some valid points, and has a cute impressive budget, traveling to Mexico, and few countries in southeast Asia, where pot is grown and used. At one point, he speaks with tourists and even the Dalai Lama's rep in Kathmandu, Nepal for opinions on the government sanctioned used there. An entertaining 90 minute documentary, which is a rebuttal to the fight on pot test in the early 1970s. Few times, it seems de Renzy asked certain questions, maybe for shock value, in which he didn't really expect an answer, and when the topics DOES respond it, de Renzy isn't sure what to ask next. A side note: de Renzy seemed to focus on one kind of movie from 1991 through 1997...the list can be found right here on IMDb. He died in 2001 around age 65.

This documentary about the prevalence and popularity of marijuana in the early 1970's astutely captures the mores and attitudes of both the older and young generations. Featuring interviews with customs agents, a drug dealer, a law professor, and the inevitable dope toking hippies, the viewer gets the compelling lowdown on the growing, smuggling, selling, and, of course, smoking of marijuana. What makes this approach work so well is that director Alex de Renzy gives folks on both sides of the marijuana trouble an equal occasion to state their case. Moreover, de Renzy makes for a laid-back and amiable interviewer. The world trotting territories -- Mexico, Cambodia, Nepal, Canada -- deliever an impressively expansive sense of scope. Without a doubt the strongest and most intriguing segment occurs when de Renzy talks to American GIs about scoring grass in Saigon, Vietnam. The jaunty'n'funky score by Billy Roberts and The Bridge keeps things bubbling along. The rough hand-held cinematography gives this picture a raw immediacy. A compelling and illuminating time capsule.
