Description: Want You Were Here is a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the melody business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The true star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and cute nice sober too, with David Gilmour getting lots of zone for his most lyrical guitar testing ever. And, though the album is large and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery. --Douglas Wolk

Description: Decades soon it's a tiny difficult to appreciate just how shocking Plastic Ono Band was at the time of its release. Yes, John Lennon's first post-Beatles solo album is still a must-own for any rock fan, but decades of punk, metal, and grunge have desensitized our ears somewhat to the naked howls of despair that fill tracks like "Mother," "Isolation," and "I Found Out." In addition, "I don't trust in Beatles," the climactic line of "God," doesn't have nearly the resonance as it did around the time of the Fab Four's breakup, when such a sentiment practically bordered on heresy. And yet it's a testament to the high quality of Lennon's songs that Plastic Ono Band continues to be an incredibly moving listening experience.
Description: This installment of the Classic Albums series follows the making of two Grateful Dead albums, the fiercely experimental Anthem of the Sun and the understated masterwork American Beauty, which spawned melodic gems like "Sugar Magnolia" and "Ripple." Between the archival scenes and contemporary interviews with band members, the DVD shows a band making seismic inroads in pop music--and five young guys coming to terms with artistry, mortality, and, yes, the pursuit of happiness. There is priceless footage of Neal Cassady driving Ken Kesey's bus and of the Dead, surrounded by martini-sipping hipsters, on Playboy After Dark. The greatest scenes involve band members talking about specific songs (you will never hear Phil Lesh's "Box of Rain" again without thinking of it as a gift to his dying father) or deconstructing a tune by testing every track separately. Intimate and surprisingly cohesive, Anthem to Beauty is a rare glimpse into how the Dead's magic was made.

I saw Todd Rundgren's Utopia perform in Berkeley, CA on this same tour, and have fond memories of that show. So it was both a treat and a disappointment to see this footage of the Columbus concert. I'm very glad Rundgren decided to release it, but it's unfortunate that one of the highlights of the present was excluded, no doubt because of copyright issues. The piece that originally opened the second part of the present (after the intermission), was their special performance of Ravel's Bolero. It was something that really had to be seen to be believed. Besides using one of the first examples of a loop in a live setting - at least that's how I assume it was done - we were treated to an electric / traditional hybrid of the piece. But it's been slash and all you see is the scene being cleared away during the fade up at that segment. This rather glaring omission aside, and the fact that Todd's guitar is often out of tune (although that was real to form at the time), I hope Utopia and Rundgren fanatics receive a possibility to see this film, actually on DVD. I gotta tell also that all things considered, the video and sound quality are very good, as is the band's overall performance on this particular show. There is an insightful interview with Rundgren on the DVD, which explains why we'll never see footage of the only tour that might have topped this one for the band - the RA tour. So all in all, a nice tiny time capsule from one of the most underrated groups of the time.
A DVD of some historic musical importance, "Utopia: Live In Columbus, Ohio, 1980" captures for posterity a 2+-hour evening with this exciting ensemble at the top of its game. Comprised of Todd Rundgren on guitar, Roger Powell on keyboards, Kasim Sulton on bass and Willie Wilcox on drums--four truly multitalented virtuosos--the band dishes out a tool here that draws on a wide swath of Rundgren and Utopia material; a whopping 28 songs in all. Highlights, for this viewer, are anything from the band's 1977 album "Oops! Wrong Planet," one of my favourite records of all time, and one that is sadly and inexplicably O.O.P.S. (out of print...shite!) itself. Five tunes from this collection are performed here, including "Gangrene," during which the band members present off on various instruments (Todd on drums, Kasim on guitar, Willie on bass), and "Love Is The Answer," on which Todd displays some nice singing pyrotechnics. Another notable moments of the evening are "Caravan," with its wild guitar and keyboard interchanges; "The Last Ride," with its nice ax work from Todd; the very amusing video that accompanies the song "You Create Me Crazy"; and "Cliche," one of Rundgren's prettiest numbers, performed here with just Todd on acoustic guitar and Roger on piano. Sound quality is decent enough, certainly for my modest setup, although the video looks a tad grainy; still, one gotta be grateful for the existence of this document at all, I suppose. As a bonus, this DVD gives us an interview with Rundgren today that is very revealing and informative. The boy has had a long and varied career and speaks articulately on the things that he has learned during it. Actually if we should only create him receive over his scene fright! LOL!
I saw this tour back in 1980 and it was an nice concert. Unfortunately this recording doesn't fully live up to that show. The production value was certainly lacking in comparison to what groups are putting out today. By today standard's the video does look a bit amateurish but it was 1980. As well, there was a lot of multi-media components tot he present that really didn't translate very well in this video, which is quite the shame.I love the melody so the video is worth having as fanatic of Rundgren/Utopia. It certainly does wax with nostalgia seeing this video and remembering that time so long ago.
