Description: Based on Fermín Solís’s graphic novel of the same name, published by Astiberri Ediciones in 2009, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles explores the particular circumstances surrounding the shooting of Land Without Bread (1933), Luis Buñuel’s third movie. Paris, 1930. Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel are main figures of the Surrealist movement, but Buñuel is left penniless after a scandal surrounding his first movie L’Age d’Or. However, his nice friend, the sculptor Ramón Acín, buys a lottery ticket with the promise that, if he wins, he will pay for his next film. Incredibly, luck is on their side, the ticket is a champion and so they set out to create the movie. Buñuel and the Labyrinth of the Turtles utilizes sensitive performances as well as excerpts of Buñuel’s own footage from the production, to show a deeply affecting and humanistic portrait of an artist hunting for his purpose.

Up Is Down Reviews:

Inspired by June Brindel's children's short storyline "Luap", designer-writer-director Millie Goldsholl's Up Is Down says the storyline of a man who walks with his hands with the effect being his visualizing everything in a more sunny, optimistic view than the more coldly and cynically detached one of many of the adults that surround him trying to change him into their viewpoints by using all the experiments at their disposal. The abstract animation of the humans mixes with different fast-cutting of different images that illustrate many of the turbulent happenings that illustrated the era this movie was made in. Included in those pictures is one of the late Martin Luther King, Jr, who is dedicated in memory of in this provocative short. Along with the compelling narration of Hans Conried was the childlike melody of Dick Boyell that made Up Is Down quite a statement of how polarizing opposite viewpoints can truly be and how one needs to search some middle ground to truly create things balance out. Produced by Millie's husband, Morton Goldsholl, Up Is Down is well worth seeing for animation buffs and those who accept with the message this short is sending.
