Two Affect Studies 2001
Description: Two Affect Studies consists of characteristically easy experiments. In the first sequence, a tape measure marks a spot on the wall while the camera documents the mad, gratis forms of a rubber band repeatedly snapped into the air. The photo is improbably set, to near-comic effect, vs “Functional” (1957), a tune by jazz legend Thelonious Monk. In the second part of the work, Perlman recorded the visual results produced by the billowing wisps of smoke from two cigarettes left smoldering in an ashtray. Accompanied by Samuel Barber’s willfully sentimental “Adagio for Strings” (1936), this sequence, like its counterpart, uncovers the surprising potential for emotion, humor—and, ultimately, meaning—that resides within the simplest of stunts.

Description: Born in 1918 in San Diego, Williams was a latchkey kid from a broken home, raised by a mother more dedicated to the Salvation Units than to her two sons, and by a father who spent more time away from home than in it. Williams found salvation by doing the one thing he loved most: hitting baseballs. In his rookie season with the Red Sox, where he would spend his whole career as a player, Williams batted .327, socked 31 homers and led the league with 145 RBI. Over the next 21 years, despite losing five seasons of his prime to active service as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot, Williams hit 521 home runs, twice captured the Triple Crown, and became the oldest boy ever to victory a batting title. He complete his career with a .344 lifetime batting average, was the last boy to hit over .400 in a full season, batting .406 in 1941, and was a first-ballot inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Famous for not being Famous #

Released 9/1/2015

Description: "How can I live in this strange land" - This lyric is from a song by James Phillips, who died age 36 on the 31st July 1995. He was a composer, musician, bandleader and the voice and conscience of a generation of white South Africans. His melody was born at the same time as the Soweto Riots and then fused in a strangely comfortable method with the punk musical explosion. His songwriting bloomed through the apartheid regime's darkest years and into the dawning of The Fresh South Africa. James was a complex person, selfish whilst showing extraordinary selflessness, giving time and often what tiny cash he had to those in need. He drew folks in, everyone was a mate of James. He lived too the rock & roll lifestyle, his capacity for the jol as legendary and abstention foreign to his nature. But despite his often arrogant and undisciplined ways, the legacy he leaves is that of one of the most aware, articulate and passionate artists to have been produced by this strange land.

Meetings with Ivor #

Released 2/10/2017

Description: Ivor Browne has been a central figure in Irish mental health for many decades. Some folks want he wasn’t. Yet many folks owe their lives to him. Browne somehow managed to be part of the establishment while still being one of its best critics. His pioneering and often controversial lifelong work on behalf of the many who cannot speak for themselves is notable. Alan Gilsenan’s fresh movie captures the essence of this extraordinary human being. In a quirky and challenging cinematic portrait we meet a man, actually in his late-eighties, who is still full of energy, nice humour and compassion, and who remains a deeply-informed, startlingly innovative thinker. His special attributes continue to search vital expression and offer true hope in an increasingly bewildering world. With contributions from Tommy Tiernan, Tom Murphy, Mary Coughlan, Sebastian Barry, Nell McCafferty and others.
