Jago: A Life Underwater #

Released 9/24/2015

Description: Jago says the storyline of an 80 year old sea nomad named Rohani who has spent his life plying the waters of South East Asia’s Coral Triangle. The storyline is said entirely from Rohani’s perspective, vs the spectacular backdrop of the Togian Islands, and recreates happenings that capture the turning points in his life, as a hunter and as a man. We were able to bring Rohani’s past experiences to life by working closely with his family and mates in the village where he grew up. These are the folks you see representing Rohani in the movie at different stages in his life. Storyline saying is a large part of Bajau culture, and a method of preserving traditions through generations, so everyone was very enthusiastic about what we were trying to do and brought lots of concepts of their own, especially Rohani. Although he had never had a camera pointed at him, it certainly wasn’t the first time he’d sat around saying stories. We were just lucky that he allow us capture it on film.

Description: “It’s not my memory of it” is a documentary about secrecy, memory, and documents. A former CIA source recounts his disappearance through shredded classified documents that were painstakingly reassembled by radical fundamentalist students in Iran in 1979 following the takeover of the U.S embassy. A CIA film—recorded in 1974 but unacknowledged until 1992—documents the burial at sea of six Soviet sailors, in a ceremony which collapses Cold Fight antagonisms in a moment of death and honor. A single photograph pertaining to a publicly acknowledged but top secret U.S. missile strike in Yemen in 2002 is the source of a reflection on the role of photos in the dynamic of knowing and not knowing.

The Glass System #

Released 5/9/2000

Description: “The Glass System, made from photos shot in Fresh York and Calcutta, looks at life as it is played out in the streets. Each corner turned reveals activities both easy and unfamiliar: a knife sharpener on a bicycle; a small tightrope walker; a boy selling watches in front of a department shop on Fifth Avenue; a hauntingly slow portrait of the darting eyes of schoolgirls on their method home; the uncompleted activities of a young contortionist. The sound in the movie (which is from a Bengali primer written by British missionaries) is a meditation on how the English language teaches concepts about culture which are often incongruous. The disjunction between what you hear and what you see evokes reflections about the impact of globalization and the hegemony of Western-style capitalism.” - ML

Description: The comings and goings of the late underground filmmaker, Curt McDowell—and the folks and activities that came and went along with him—are the themes that run through this existential diary of everyday life. McDowell was dying from AIDS-related illnesses during the production of the diary. “An elegy for McDowell, the videowork captures Kuchar’s mournful remembrances of his long-lasting friendship with the young filmmaker. But it also has the inquisitive charm, perverse humor, and quirky candor that territories Kuchar’s visual expressions in a gritty niche all their own.” —Steve Seid, George Kuchar in Person (Berkeley: Pacific Movie Archives, 1988)

The Warriors: Battleground Reviews:

The Warriors: Battleground (2005) *** 1/2 (out of 4)This here is an exceptionally entertaining look at the making of Walter Hill's THE WARRIORS, which clocks in at a total of 62-minutes and is broken into four various parts: The Beginning, Battleground, The Method Home and The Phenomenon. THE BEGINNING talks about, as you'd guess, the begin of the production as the concept for the film took off after one of the producers came across the book. From here we receive into the territories being picked as well as the cast coming on board. BATTLEGROUND takes a closer look at the filming of the film and we receive a lot more technical background including the cinematography. THE WAY HOME takes a look at the costumes, the sets and different plot features about the gang trying to create it back home. Finally, THE PHENOMENON goes over the end of filming, the editing and the effects at the box office. If you're a fanatic of THE WARRIORS then you're going to really play this documentary, which covers each aspect of the production and has interviews with most of the main cast members, the producers, editors and of course Hill himself. There are a lot of nice stories said about the production of the film and we also receive to see an alternate opening sequence. The cast members say some very nice stories about their memories of the movie as well as their thoughts on the fact that the movie has still got a large following.
