The Voyagers 2010
Description: In the summer of 1977, NASA sent Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 on an epic adventure into interstellar space. Together and alone, they will travel until the end of the universe. Every spacecraft carries a golden record album, a heavy compilation of photos and sounds embodying the greatest of Planet Earth. According to Carl Sagan, “[t]he spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this bottle into the cosmic ocean tells something very hopeful about life on this planet.” While working on the golden record, Sagan met and fell madly in love with his future wife Annie Druyan. The record became their love letter to humankind and to every other. In the summer of 2010, I began my own hopeful voyage into the unknown. This movie is a love letter to my fellow traveler. - Penny Lane

The Voyagers Reviews:

The Voyagers is basically a documentary that talks about the voyager missions in relation to the gold record which carries photos and sounds from World endlessly into deep space. It says us about the origins of this record and of the relationship that Carl Sagan had with a colleague that Sagan worked on the record with. This talk of relationships allows the narration to begin to ponder on this love while also saying the storyline of the Voyager probes and then also talk about her own relationship. If it sounds terrible and pretentious then you are right, because it fully has the potential to be and even when I describe it above I search myself wondering what on world I found to like in this arty nonsense when all I was looking for was a zone documentary. But it isn't terrible and it now works cute well although it does need you to go with it, because it does walk a fine line in the connections it makes and the territories the thoughts go. However, to support you "go with it", it is done well enough to lead you rather than demand you meet it there. It may look and feel like a documentary, but to me it worked more as poetry because it engaging lyrically – not with flights of fancy or hard wording, but more just with the delicateness of its thoughts and patterns that carried me with it. So it engaged me in the factual side and then deftly brought in emotion and feeling in the context of those facts, before then moving more directly into them but still not losing touch with the base. This is all delivered over archive footage which again supports to anchor us in somewhere factual and familiar and I felt quite comfortable and relaxed as the concepts of love and perseverance of spirit in the face of the odds. Lane's mellow and concise voice is engaging and the effect is something of a delicate, lyrical beauty even if it does walk a fine line and will not victory over all viewers as a result.
