Description: Unusually elaborate for a PRC film, Minstrel Boy is a lively musical drama built around the talents of veteran vaudevillian Benny Fields. The star is cast as Dixie Man Johnson, who rises from the ranks of minstrel shows to become a top Broadway attraction. On the opening night of his best scene triumph, Dixie Boy's wife dies in childbirth. Profoundly shaken, he walks out of the show, leaving the baby to be raised by his showbiz pals Mae and Lasses White (Gladys George, Roscoe Karns). The child grows up to be an pretty young girl called Caroline (Judy Clark), who follows in her dad's footsteps by billing herself as-that's right-Dixie Woman Johnson. This leads to a tearful reunion between Caroline and the father she'd long assumed to be dead. If Minstrel Boy seems at times to be a dress rehearsal for Columbia's The Jolson Storyline (1946), it shouldn't surprising: the PRC movie was directed by Joseph H. Lewis, who went on to helm Jolson Story's musical highlights.

She also pursues a romance with much-older playwright Henry Wilcoxon, only to be (deliberately) disillusioned by the man. Description: In this musical, the second entry in a five-film series, a thrift store owner sells his business and buys a tiny time radio station. He starts looking for sponsors. He finds one with a department shop owner who will only lend him the cash if he will let his daughter, an aspiring tap-dancer and singer, to perform on the air. Songs include: the Oscar nominated "Who Am I?," "Swing Weak Sweet Rhythm," "In The Cool of the Evening," "Make Yourself at Home," "The Swap Store Song," "The Trading Post," "Sally," "Ramona," "Sweet Sue," "Dinah," "Margie," and "Mary Lou."
Description: In his last movie assignment, portly Walter Connolly fills the game role (in more methods than one) in The Nice Victor Herbert. Very tiny of Herbert's life storyline is incorporated in the screenplay (a closing game now apologizes for the film's paucity of cold difficult facts); instead, the writers let the famed composer's works to speak for themselves. In the tradition of one of his own operettas, Herbert spends most of his time patching up the shaky marriage between tenor John Ramsey (Allan Jones) and Louise Hall (Mary Martin). Many of Herbert's most popular compositions are well in evidence, including "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life", "March of the Toys" and "Kiss Me Again", the latter performed con brio by teenaged coloratura Susanna Foster. Evidently, the producers were able to safe the movie rights for the Herbert songs, but not for the scene productions in which they appeared, which may explain such bizarre interpolations as having a song from Naughty Marietta.
Description: Dorothy Lamour and Ray Milland, a famous Paramount screen squad specializing in south-sea extravaganzas, don "civilized" garb (at least briefly) for Tropic Holiday. Lamour plays a Mexican senorita, while Milland is a visiting American screenwriter. Since we know where this is going, our attention is deflected each so often by comedy relief Bob "Bazooka" Burns and Martha Raye, who are frankly more watchable than the leads. Also on hand is Mexican musical star Tito Guizar, who was still packing 'em in for his concert tours of the 1980s. Tropic Vacation contrives to remove most of Dorothy Lamour's clothing before the fade-out, just so we remember who's top billed around here.

That Woman From Paris received an Academy Award Nomination for Greatest Sound, and contains musical highlights such as, "Seal It With a Kiss," "The Blue Danube," "Una Voce Poco Fa," and "The Call to Arms." Directed by Leigh Jason, this film also details actors Mischa Auer, Frank Jenks, Lucille Ball and Jack Oakie.
Description: The "Caliban-Ariel" romance of fiftysomething John Barrymore and teenager Elaine Barrie is spoofed in this delicious 20th Century Fox musical. Adolphe Menjou plays the Barrymore counterpart, a loose-living film star with a penchant for wine, women, and more wine. Alice Faye plays a nightclub singer hungry for publicity. Her agent (Gregory Ratoff) arranges a "romance" between Faye and Menjou. Eventually Faye winds up with Michael Whalen, allowing Menjou to continue his blissful, bibulous bachelorhood. Sing, Baby, Sing represented the feature-film debut of the Ritz Brothers, who are in top form in their specialty numbers--and who are awarded a final curtain call after the "The End" title, just so the audience won't forget them (The same device was used to introduce British actor George Sanders in Fox's Lancer Spy ).
Description: Canary-voiced man wonder Bobby Breen once more croons his method into our hearts in Create a Wish. While vacationing at a boys' camp, the rambunctious Breen befriends famed composer Basil Rathbone. Stuck for an inspiration for his recent operetta, Rathbone at last finds it when he meets Breen's superb mother Marion Claire, a famous singer. Alas, her stiff-necked fiance Ralph Forbes refuses to let her to return to the stage, whereupon Rathbone spirals into a depression -- and even worse, a profound situation of writers' block. But Little-Mister-Fixit Breen manages to patch up everything just in time for Claire to debut in Rathbone's recent masterpiece.
