Description: Katerina Izmailova is a filmization of Dmitry Shostakovich's long-suppressed 1936 opera. Galina Vishnevskaya stars as Katerina, a bored 19th century farm wife. At the behest of her grungy lover, Katerina murders her husband and her father-in-law. She and her fresh beau are both sent to Siberia, where the lover almost instantly takes up with a younger woman. Banned by Stalin for its bleak portrait of Soviet life, Katerina Izmailova was not given a Russian staging for over 40 years; its Metropolitan Opera debut did not occur until 1994. Dmitri Shostakovich also wrote the screenplay for the screen ver of Katerina Izmailova.
Description: Highly symbolic and allegorical, this drama takes the find of a son for his father in the chaotic times of the Mexican Revolution and the early 1900s as its basis. Stereotypical (or archetypal) figures from early Mexican cinema appear from time to time, and the violence of the revolutionary period is not glossed over. As the son searches for the father, scenes of the father and his earthy method of living are screened. Given that it relies so heavily on knowledge of Mexican history and Mexican cinema in addition to being something of an art-film, non-Mexican viewers will need to be both erudite and patient.

Description: Jose Antonio Amor co-stars with Sonia Bruno and Maria Blanco in this comedy drama about a married boy with three children. When his family leaves on vacation, the boy has an affair with a cute office worker. The relationship between the two develops slowly before they end up in bed together. Speeded up shots are used effectively to illustrate the thoughts of the characters. Technical aspects and performances are fine and overshadow some uneven editing.

As the water lvl rises in the river, folks band together to test and save the man before he drowns. He is comforted by his mother (G. Vachtov) and an units general (P. Slobokov), and the latter calls out the units to save the lad from liquidation. This detail was the official Bulgarian entry at the 1965 Cannes Movie Festival and is devoid of the usual 1960s propaganda associated with countries from the Eastern block of Europe.

At the end of the war, a dejected Karl returns to Athens in hopes of being reunited with the girl whom he willingly turned over to authorities and who ended up in a concentration camp. The premise of the storyline is difficult to take because Lisa was well aware of Karl's rampant anti-Semitic beliefs when her uncle overheard Karl making a speech.

The set is a sound scene and the actors in this movie are dancers on the stage, performing a mime-ballet derived from one particular legend. Both the enacted legend and the current happenings affecting the dancers are parallel. The lead dancer Isa (Ludmila Tcherina) is still nursing her wounds after her first love left her to stand alone at the altar. Actually one of the dancers wants to expand his relationship with Isa -- and later after, the cad who jilted her suddenly shows up again. Tragedy follows closely behind.

As the prisoners interact vs a background of strife, imprisonment, and references to a rising Communist presence, they come to explore that there is an outside informer passing on notification to the enemy. Description: The subject of this routine, romantic drama is a tiny unusual - it concerns what some prisoners do when they are allowed out of jail for two weeks before their sentences are up. Rather than receiving some unique dispensation, it turns out that in Yugoslavia this was the custom. Most of the time, the boys here are engaged in pursuits that forward their relationships with the fairer sex, as might be expected after a long and lonely incarceration. There is nothing particularly profound about their two weeks of liberty, and no deep message in the tale.
Description: In this undistinguished drama, Darclee (Silvia Popovici) is a lead singer for an opera company in Romania with a massive load of responsibility. It seems the company is in dire need of a decent physical structure for their performances and a brace -- or more -- of nice singers to improve their photo and sales. In another words, they need just about everything except an perfect lead singer; Darclee fills that bill. And so the company rather unfairly leans on her to receive the folks and the funds they so desperately want. Matei Jacob directs.
Description: Meant principally for a sympathetic audience, whether Catholic or not, this routine storyline about a priest's receiving the call to the cloth may be a bit slow and theatrical for some viewers. Directed by Lima Barreto, the tale is said in a series of flashbacks as the priest remembers how he was transformed as a kid into a person willing to give his life in service of the church and his God. Barreto also scripted the story, which in the end, may be too filled with religious platitudes and preachy overtones to effectively convey its message.
Description: A special concept is pulled off in this amusing fantasy-drama with implications that lie beyond the storyline itself. Ably directed by René Mugica, the tale starts when a young soccer user is sold at auction and expects to end up on a major team. Instead, he discovers he has been acquired by a super-rich tycoon whose objective in life is to accumulate the greatest -- not art or stamps -- but people. The wealthy collector does not let his "collection" to do anything, which amounts to imprisoning everyone in a golden cage. While the ballerina he has on file expresses her longing for her art by surreptitiously dancing in the rain, the soccer user has a much more aggressive minigame plan for getting out of this predicament.

Description: In cold print, 1960s Delinquents sound like a Spanish-language precursor to a Mickey Rourke/Sean Penn flick of the 1980s. The delinquents of the game are three restless slum kids, given to petty thievery. When one of the men expresses a desire to become a bullfighter, the others pool their energies to pull one large heist in order to finance their pal's dream. The would-be bullfighter makes a disastrously dismal debut in the ring, and the gang is rounded up by the cops.
