Description: Robert Breer’s What Goes Up... continues his “kitchen sink” approach of including as many various kinds of things as possible. Central to his art are a series of tensions. Rather than using animation to produce seamless illusions, his movies reveal cinema’s dual nature as both an illusion of movement and a succession of stills. The ultimate result of his work is ecstatic: by combining different rhythmic patterns, abstract and photographed shapes, and flatness mixed with depth illusions, Breer energizes ordinary eyesight. The entire globe can seem more alive, alive with rhythms and colors and shapes and textures as well, after seeing one of his films. But Breer’s movies also often have a theme of failure, of failed movements and failed aspirations, and the game What Goes Up..., in referencing the idiom “What goes up gotta come down”, refers to his childhood dreams of flying (illustrated here as in many of his movies with airplanes) as well as to the limpness that follows orgasm for males.

This short documentary describes the landings and occupation of Rendova, a lightly defended island just to the north of Guadalcanal. The Units had tiny problem except from snipers. "Like all savage animals the Japs took to the trees." The object was to establish a base from which the nearby stronghold of Munda should be shelled. The target was accomplished but of course the Japanese retaliated with bombing raids. The raid destroyed supplies, vehicles, and guns. But it was a surprise to see, in a documentary from the fight years, shots of American troops who had been killed in the air raid, some of the bodies half buried in mud and already in rigor. I wouldn't have thought the censors would let it.The narration is telegraphic in style. "Supplies. Difficult work. Necessary." It wasn't a huge scale or glamorous operation. It wasn't of nice strategic importance like Midway or Guadalcanal, only an incremental step towards the Japanese homeland. The point of taking Munda was accomplished but the occupation is rarely celebrated.
