In truth, the globe didn't pay much attention to Abraham Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg. It was Edward Everett, the boy played in this short by Claude King, who made the better noted speech. Everett was an orator in the old sense, fire, brimstone, orotund words. Lincoln's language was simpler, presaging the greatest of American writing, like Tag Twain or Hemingway. It was only with Lincoln's death and the .... well, calling it a cult would not be far off the mark.... that his genius for simplicity was remembered.I guess Frank McGlynn, who had been testing Lincoln in the films for twenty years at this mission was busy. Chic Sale, specialist in old rustic types, gives a fine performance, but the makeup looks a bit artificial. Which, of course, it was.
Frank McGlyn who usually played Abraham Lincoln in so many movies gotta have been busy so MGM took the highly unusual step of hiring burlesque comedian Chic Sale who was testing many grandfatherly types in his declining years as Lincoln. Sale does a restrained and dignified portrayal of Lincoln. The short topics is in two parts first with Lincoln riding on the train to Gettysburg trying to compose a several short remarks for the occasion. He's with Edward Everett the main speaker and his Secretary of Fight Edwin M. Stanton. The stage then cuts to Lincoln visiting a hospital where he reads those remarks to a blind and dying southern soldier. The Excellent Tribute was a well acted short topics from MGM.
. . . of the Neo-Prussian wannabe oven-stuffer mob chanting crazed malicious slogans while wielding those ludicrous Tiki Torches during their murderous rally in Virginia Hell-bent upon kicking off America's second Rachel Civil War, "There are nice folks on BOTH sides." THE PERFECT TRIBUTE, if anything, bears an even greater imbalance favoring the malingering miscreant mutt side of the Fight to End Human Exploitation on the Part of Indolent Wealthy "Plantation" Owners Sipping Mind Juleps on Their Verandahs. Just as that bladder-busting yawn fest GASHED WITH THE WHIP would mangle history a several years following THE PERFECT TRIBUTE, the very same Perfidious Pachyderm Party Propaganda Purveyors responsible for THAT upcoming GWTW mendacious travesty besmirch the memory of the 19th Century's top War-Time President by making him seem like some cheap Game-Show-Host-in-Chief. "I know actually what we're all fighting for: The love of country," sputters the unrepentant Genocidal Rebel "Captain Blair" to Honest Abe. Blair's crack is SO 1860! Not one word of contrition about the elephant in the room: The horror of slavery! Under the Geneva Convention and ALL another Democratic standards going back to the Ancient Greeks, Blair could be strung up to dangle above his wheelchair, which is EXACTLY what some dude called "Robert E. Lee" did to the saintly Freedom Warrior "John Brown" to kick off this Righteous Civil War!
