William S. Rising pawns his violin, but the cash is gotten too late to save his wife and he goes mad. His daughter, Grace Scott, has him committed to the looney bin. It's a matter of some consolation that his last composition has been agreed for performance. When the artist who was to perform it stalks off in a rage, Miss Scott takes her zone on scene and is greeted with wild approval. In fact, one of her admirers abducts her. This two-reeler from American Eclair looks to be a very ambitious one, saying a storyline with twists and a lot of incidents. Unfortunately, far too much of it appears to have been left on the cutting-room floor, leaving it said in a rather telegraphic fashion, with only the games to create sense of the action. It's clear that director Jay Hunt was ambitious, and eventually he would receive to do some greater work; he was one of the uncredited director's of Ince's CIVILIZATION and would continue to direct until 1920. After that, he would return to acting until his death in 1932.
This is not a lost film. It hides away in the EYE Desmet collection where it is misidentifed aa the 1909 Vitagraph film, The Terrible Musician. It is constant melodrama rather from one end to the another and the contemporary review that criticises the production for carelessness is entirely correct in each respect. The cast is a relatively obscure one but one conceivable mission of interest is the presence in it of Dorothy Gibson, which would create it a rare surviving movie to detail the actress who would become sadly popular the following years as a survivor of the Titanic disaster. However the "prima donna" in the movie is in fact the daughter herself (played by Grace Scott), so that the only remaining part that should have been played by Gibson is the prima donna's maid, who appears only very fleetingly.
The old musician had complete an opera. Before it was agreed he became very poor. Just before his nice work was agreed for production his wife died. The daughter receives the letter of acceptance; for the old boy has lost his reason and has been taken to the island. Fate chooses her to carry the leading part in the opera herself and she becomes a big-hatted prima donna. But one of her admirers abducts her from the scene door. Her manager sees it and saves her. Her father gets well and gives his blessing. The producer seems to have taken too tiny care with his scene sets and loses the impression desired actually and then. For instance, the surroundings gave no evidence of poverty in the old man's home. Also the abduction was crude and not to be believed, nor was the chase and capture. - The Moving Picture World, December 23, 1911
