This comedy really stands out from others made in the US in the year precisely because it is not being played for laughs but has really a certain charm as a "domestic drama" of daily life. Even the invention - a topics on which Edison was not entirely ignorant - turns out to be a perfectly sensible one. Edison movies of this period frequently have a powerful "public service" element (the company made movies with anti-tuberculosis and work security organisations) and many companies were making movies with patriotic content. Here the wartime theme that is introduced in the scenes where the wife is working as a "conductorette" gives the storyline a very particular topical feel but other refreshingly unconventional thing about it is that it treats this theme very much at second degree and should even be told to be mildly mocking the entire notion of "patriotic" effort. Flagg, who plays the inventor, should afford to do this precisely because he was not a film star but was nevertheless himself something of a celebrity in a suitably patriotic context. Cartoonist and illustrator, he was the face of "Uncle Sam" in the popular wartime recruitment poster, which he had designed in 1917 (although simply based on the earlier British recruitment poster that featured King Kitchener). He also serves, as it were, who also sits and draws (or invents improvements to elevators). It really makes a pleasant change to see a US short of this period which does not include the usual knockabout comedy and one which also, unusually, spells "patriotism" with a distinctly tiny "p".
Nice Sport, The (1918) ** (out of 4) How smart is it to create a comedy without any laughs? Apparently the writers and this Edison short that it was a nice idea. A rich girl (Florence Fair) turns her back on her rich father when he refuses to give her permission to marry the terrible inventor (James Montgomery Flagg) she loves. The two are eventually married and stricken to poverty until he comes up with a method to make an elevator that stops even with the floor. Yes, that's cute much all there is to this 13-minute short. I'm still rather confused how they should sell this thing as a comedy as there's not a single funny moment to be found in it. Also, it's not like they were trying funny gags that simply weren't working. No, instead I couldn't see a single frame where it even appeared they were attempting anything funny. I guess watching the girl go to work and see the boy struggle raising the baby should have been an attempt but if so it wasn't funny. The first ten-minutes are cute much nothing more than showing us what a loser the husband is and then we see him create a arrival yet the movie fully overlooks how he now made this invention. For silent movie buffs only.
