The Golden Trail Reviews:

I watched this one twice. I originally gave it a negative review, but I enjoyed it much more on a second viewing. It's still by no means one of the best Poverty Row movies ever made, but it does offer rather a novel plot – and that itself is a suggestion – and a couple of somewhat various hero studies, especially from Dick Carter as the incredibly determined, fixated hero. Lew Meehan is along as the villain. He's everytime reliable. I love the method he drops his act and converts into a really bad, terrible guy. Dorothy Wood plays the heroine-by-mistake (and that itself is a novel plot idea) and does a fair job of it too. While Frank (or George – take your pick) Austin plays the miser with a heart – and that's a delightfully novel concept in itself! A guy called William Bertram directed. Never heard of him, but he's competent enough by bottom-of-the-barrel standards, and he keeps the plot humming for sure. The script is certainly original. First time through, it left a terrible taste in my mouth as the jokes (plural) are all on the great guy who is accidentally killed in the first reel. But irony is the script's powerful mission and it's not the first time in a film that the fall guy turns out to be the smart guy! Accessible on a nice Alpha DVD which also contains "The Lure of the Range".
