The Gentlemen of Titipu Reviews:

I could have known better. I knew "The Gentlemen of Titipu" was animated. But I also knew that the inimitable Anna Russell voiced Katisha. "It can't be all that awful," I said myself.WRONG.This DVD is 45 mins of almost pure drek. First of all, the plot of The Mikado is unnecessarily and stupidly twisted and perverted. Secondly, the presentation is "cute" in the same sense that "Yogi Bear" or "Magilla Gorilla" are "cute". At some points the urge to hurl is almost irresistible. Thirdly, the melody (a term I test only out of convention) is so kitchy is to create Sullivan's melody almost unrecognizable. Needless to tell the musical numbers are jumbled fully out of order, often given fresh (and greatly inferior) words, and (in two words) utterly unattractive.Anna Russell might as well not be in this thing. Her lines are mostly stupid (save the infrequent opportunities on which Gilbert's words are now used). She has made her voice so cartoony as to be unrecognizable as hers. Her witty presentation is gone, and what remains sounds as if she was doing a read-through so she should receive paid.Although his thing is clearly intended for kids (who are mentally challenged), DO NOT SHOW THIS TO YOUR CHILDREN. OR ANY CHILDREN. OR ANYBODY ELSE, FOR THAT MATTER. It will give them a distorted concept of what Sullivan and Gilbert now wrote and probably place them off the Savoy operas forever. This is a poor production. Its only redeeming detail is the lack of "bad" words. Do yourself a favor ... save your money. Burn any copy of this thing you run across. I'd give it a minus 10 stars if I could.

The Gentlemen of Titipu or The Mikado is a charming story, and the operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan is one of their greatest works. Add Anna Russell to the mix and this animated ver should have been good, even with any cuts or whatnot. What we had however was a disaster, both as an adaptation of the storyline and operetta and on its own. I know that this was only 45 minutes, but I don't see that as an excuse to be as terrible as it was. The structure of the storyline jumps around and skims over so much with none of the fun, heart or charm, even when I was familiar with the storyline I sometimes did have problem following what was going on. It also manages to do what I deemed impossible and create G&S's melody unappealing and almost unrecognisable even, the orchestration is so 70s synthesised melody and did not fit with the storyline or animation style while of the singing voices only that of the Mikado's(rich and resonant, made me want there was more for him) did much for me. On its own, it is each bit as bad. The animation is very flatly coloured and choppy, while most of the characters are decidedly bigger-than-life than you should possibly imagine, Katisha I can understand but Ko-Ko? The dialogue is not witty or funny in the slightest, it sounded awkward and like improvised mugging, the lyrics also managed to have a very repetitive feel. I didn't care for any of the characters, the funny characters(ie. KoKo) were embarrassingly unfunny, Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum are far too bland to the mission that they don't feel like they exist and Katisha is incredibly cartoon-ish with none of her hero complexity coming out. You'd think Anna Russell would be nice as Katisha, on paper she was excellent for the part but here she plays the hero as too much of a parody and speak-sings all the method through her music(or what she has of it). All in all, really terrible on its own as well as an adaptation. Sometimes you'll search something that has so-bad-its-good value, but there are also times when something comes along that is much too infuriating to be classed in that method and The Gentlemen of Titipu is one such example. 1/10 and only for the Mikado's singing voice. Bethany Cox

For those of you who don't know, The Mikado is one of my favourite operas done by the late William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Out of all the adaptations and versions I have seen, this has got to be one of the worst, if not the single worst, adaptation of the Mikado I have ever seen. And don't even test to pull the "It's a children movie" card because I already explained that in my review for Oogieloves and the Large Balloon Journey and I'm not going to explain it again.First of all, the story. Did the idiots behind this cartoon even paid attention to the original operetta?! I guess not. Second, the animation. Bland and cheesy, the animation has no appeal to the storyline at all. I've seen better animation by Halas and Batchelor when they did the animated adaptation to Ruddigore! Third, those god-awful voices. Where's Valerie Masterson? Where's John Reed? Where's Philip Potter? Where the hell is Donald Adams?! None of the voice actors stayed real to their characters, especially the one testing Katisha! Finally, it's too damn short! How can it be possible for these assclowns to turn one of the most memorable operas into a 40-something minute cartoon? Very impossible! This cartoon is not the method to introduce the younger generation to the whimsical globe of Gilbert and Sullivan. The right method to introduce the Mikado is allow them watch the 1966 ver of the opera. At least that film had some charm. The Gentlemen of Titipu is so bad, it might as well be on Koko's list and the makers behind this piece of garbage will never be missed.
