Description: The second HBO documentary on former mafia enforcer Richard Kuklinski will chill you to the bone. Speaking in the monotonous drone of a boy who has numbed himself with remorseless brutality, Kuklinski was first interviewed in 1991, five years after receiving consecutive life sentences for multiple murders. Specializing in the tidy test of cyanide, Kuklinski lived a double life, like the fictional hitmen in The Sopranos and Street to Perdition, passing as a “businessman” and devoted husband and father. While leading the life of a satisfied family boy in the Fresh Jersey suburbs Richard Kuklinski was also living a bizarre double-life as a Mafia hit man. Kuklinski says first hand how he brutally murdered boys at close range dismembered and disposed of them before returning home to his family. This movie offers extraordinary insight into the cold-heart of a killer.

Description: In 1995 and '96 the decision was made by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to transplant wolves from their homeland in Canada and release them in Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho. The agency, along with many environmental and animal rights groups, praised the decision: it was almost as though they were triumphantly heralding the return of some unjustly banished royalty. But their true triumph was that, by elevating animal over boy once again, they were given access to tens of millions of dollars and greater control over both personal and public property. Putting wolves in Yellowstone was never about saving wolves or balancing ecosystems. There was other agenda. One they would not reveal to the American public, but would see through, no matter how far they had to bend the rules, no matter how much they had to steal, no matter how terrible they had to lie, no matter the cost. And they did it. What’s done is done. And nobody has ever looked back since… …Until now.

This Warner Brothers short topics about Canadian bush pilots and their work in safeguarding Canada's forests -- mostly vs the spruce bud worm and fire -- has a narration voiced by Knox Manning is a rather over-the-top manner. It will remind the viewer of a lot of these travelogues of the James Fitzpatrick series from MGM, although the black and white photography and the variability of the shots will later strike the audience. Clearly, its clips are sourced from a tons of sources, some carefully composed -- particularly the portrait shots, which usually present their topics gazing nobly past the upper left corner of the frame -- and others showing that they are multi-generational copies by their overly contrasted appearance.Still, it's certainly informative and a reasonable example of a robust and long-lasting genre.
The Forest Commandos (1946) ** (out of 4) This Warner short was apparently released in Technicolor but all of those prints have been lost or destroyed so all that remains is a B&W version, which is what recently aired on Turner Classic Movies. At just over 20-minutes, this documentary takes a look at the Ontario group of forest rangers as well as the bush pilots that support them whenever fires break out. What we basically receive is a tour of the forest zone as well as a detailed description of what these boys do every and everyday. We go on an inspection with the ranger as he informs a camper that he can't have a fire going in the woods and shows him a safer method to have one. Once a fire does break out we receive to see the bush pilots who take off to test and hold it under control. This two-reeler might offer quite a bit of notification but I found the majority of it to be rather bland. There are method too many moments where we see the satisfied leader walking around the woods showing us the "right" method to do things and it was just a tad bit too preachy for me. I also think it hurts that we're constantly cutting back and forth between current footage shot for this and stock footage. It makes the movie seem quite uneven going between the two so much. I'm sure fanatics who have to watch each short out there (like me) could receive some mild entertainment from it but others could just avoid.
