Though this movie fits the coming of age category the struggles that Nadine, the main character, is going through are not purely 'teen problems', As a 20 something year old this movie deeply resonated with me and though related to Nadine I was a socially awkward, defensive and pessimistic teenager it wasn't just the teenage me who should search the hero relatable. I've noticed in the weak rated comments one of the main reasons folks didn't like the movie is because the main hero isn't likeable. And though I loved the film, I would agree; she isn't likeable. And the movie is more realistic and better off for it. In true life we aren't everytime likeable folks ourselves and the movie almost acts as a software to let us to step back and really look at our actual or teenage selves. Nadine does realise and understand towards the end and throughout the movie her erratic and selfish behaviour is a effect of her self loathing because she knows she doesn't wish to continue being that method but she's stuck in this unlimited cycle and doesn't know how to receive out. The valuable lesson from the movie and her adventure within it is that we often bring misfortune and unhappiness on ourselves in the method we handle and reply to terrible things in our lives. I think this movie will speak to anyone who has felt alone in the world, lost without purpose or anywhere to fit in. If you like movies about folks rather than action and you watch a movie to be taken on a adventure (albeit an emotional one) rather than to have an enjoyable couple of hours then this may be the movie for you. It supports that is has an perfect cast, every actor fitting their roles well and bringing them to life.Another positive note I took away from the movie is the method it handles and represents mental illness/ distress as it does so without labels and in a subtle method without needing to bring it to the forefront.
As a fanatic of the "coming of age" storyline structure, I am satisfied to report that this movie met my expectations in each single way. Some key plot points were predictable, but the writing, performances and soundtrack were all on point. The emotions and experiences the movie conveys do not feel artificial, and Hailee Steinfeld shines! Clever writing and tiny twists here and there will likely leave you genuinely invested in the life of these characters and leave you wanting more. Woody Harrelson plays a unbelievable photo of a teacher dealing with his life amidst high school drama and Kyra Sedgwick's performance as a struggling mother was especially heart felt and real. This is not to be missed for fanatics of this genre!
What seems to be the typical "teen" film of young teenagers in high school ends up being an unusual film of its kind. I explain: although it's real that the movie is a teen film (it does not deceive anyone), it is also real that this is more complex and adult than it appears in a first look. The movie has some of the typical stereotypes of the genre, I will not lie, but still breaks with the dynamics of these films, as it shows a fragile woman and reveals all her fears. The viewer sees how Nadine is with her issues and concerns.Everyone is great! Hailee Steinfeld is the ideal actress for the hero of Nadine, she is the queen of the movie and manages to create her hero feel real, getting you to empathize with her and create the movie an extraordinary work into the genre. Without she, the movie probably would not have been as nice as it is. Also, Woody Harrelson. Seriously, incredible. All the scenes with him are great. He does a very nice role, and the peculiar Nadine-professor couple with their dialogues are the best.Highly recommended!
