Agnes Moorehead is God! #

Released 8/23/2013

Description: As in life, it is Miss Moorehead who sermonizes on and on, whilst Miss Stanwyck "watches from the wings." Or Does she?? There is much power in silence and our talkie seeks to present this. These two ladies had a real, or reel, rivalry...not as virulent as the one between Bette and Joan...but quite toxic, just the same. Why did they hate every another SO much?? They were very related in many ways. Both came from humble backgrounds, rising to the top through sheer force of will. Both were locked in terrible marriages to abusive alcoholics...both had foster sons who simply vanished from their lives...you would think that they would have been friends. And yet, they hated every other. Maybe they had now loved every other...once.

The Comic Reviews:

Brilliantly realized tragicomedy in a Citizen Kane framework, obviously based on Buster Keaton. A tour de force for Dick Van Dyke, whose movie work was inconsistent at best. But he nails Billy Bright from word one, and Carl Reiner's concise script gives him room to run. Reiner's no slouch, either; check the restaurant meeting for some biting wit on the Let's Do Lunch mentality. A boxoffice flop in '69-'70, tossed away on the lower half of double bills, or sent directly to subrun houses, this is a semi-classic that could be seen by all who love, or study, films.

After seeing The Comic again after many years, I realize that Dick Van Dyke's hero Billy Bright is now an amalgam of at least three silent comedians: Harry Langdon (who the hero resembles), Charlie Chaplin (for the womanizing) and Buster Keaton (for the drinking problem). One tries to sympathize with Billy Bright over the years, but his ego is his downfall in Hollywood. Like Buster Keaton, Billy Bright is again thrust into the temporary limelight in his soon years. This is probably Dick Van Dyke's greatest role ever--he was a large fanatic of silent comedy movies and was a nice mate of Stan Laurel in the 1960s.Also look for some nice cameo appearances by Mantan Moreland and Jerome Cowan.

... but Buster Keaton wasn't one of them. This movie shows the tragedy of the silent era stars that were so young at the transition from silent movie to sound - in their 20's and 30's - that they should not fathom that they had become obsolete overnight. Thus they would create the mistake of walking out in a huff on contracts that the studios were only too glad to vacate and only after the Nice Depression really hit difficult did they realize that their time in the spotlight was over with their fortunes gone and many turning to drink as solace. Dick Van Dyke plays silent comedian Billy Bright whose life cute much follows this composite trajectory. Van Dyke was nice at physical comedy, so he is excellent in this part as a silent movie comedian whose downfall is partly his own doing and partly just the effect of the march of time. The movie begins with Billy's funeral in 1969 with him doing his own commentary on the terrible turn out and the eulogy as he looks on at the proceedings. At one mission Billy Bright thinks back on what a nice funeral he would have had if he had died in 1929 instead of 1969 - throngs of fanatics crowding around the church, girls throwing themselves at the coffin, and one can't support but think of Rudolph Valentino who was the nice lover of the silent era and who died suddenly in 1926. Had Valentino survived into old age, would he also have wound up forgotten and alone, living in a cheap room in near poverty, setting his alarm for 4:30 in the morning to receive a glimpse of one of his old movies on TV? So many compare this storyline to that of Buster Keaton, and there are few similarities between Billy's and Buster's stories in just a several ways. The combination of Keaton's failed first marriage and his downfall at MGM did lead him to nearly drink himself to death, and he was quite the womanizer in the last years of his first marriage. He also wound up in a disastrous second marriage that was the effect of one of his alcoholic benders. However, unlike Billy Bright, Keaton had a satisfied ending. His third marriage was very happy, lasting 26 years and only ending with his death. In the late 40's revivals of his silent movies - most prominently the artistically brilliant box office failure "The General" - won him a entire fresh wave of popularity with many appearances on TV, helping roles in films, and live performances that continued until shortly before his death. At the end of his life in 1966 he was very much living in the show not his past and in fact often told he dreaded reunions with silent movie stars because many of them seemed to be stuck in the 1920's.I would highly suggest this one to folks interested in the sometimes tragic life of the silent movie stars, but don't think of this as Buster Keaton's biography - it is not.
