The Lone Star Vigilantes #

Description: It's Wild Bill Elliot as Wild Bill Hickok in the Columbia B-western Lone Star Vigilantes. This time out, Elliot is teamed with singing cowboy Tex Ritter, while comedy relief is provided by diminutive stuntman Frank Mitchell. Returning from Civil Fight duty, Hickok, Tex Martin (Ritter) and Cannonball (Mitchell) search that their Texas home city is under the rule of Colonel Monroe (Forrest Taylor), a bush-league dictator with his own police force. In real Hitlerian fashion, Monroe extorts large sums of cash from the populace, terrorizing them into silence. Our three heroes set about to place an end to Monroe's regime, with time out for Tex Ritter's musical interludes.

Description: A well-acted, well-paced entry in the Don "Red" Barry Western series from Republic Pictures, The Sombrero Child featured the diminutive Barry as Jerry Holden, the apparent son and heir of veteran lawman Tom Holden (Robert Homans). But when Holden Sr. is killed by one of Banker Martin's (Joel Friedkin) gang of claim jumpers, Jerry learns that his true father was Bart Clanton, a notorious bandit killed by Marshal Holden, who then raised the orphaned man as his own.

Lone Star Ranger #

Released 3/20/1942

Description: 20th Century-Fox hoped to create a movie star out of Texas A&M football character John Kimbrough, and to that end placed the gridiron character in a brace of compact westerns. The first of these was Zane Grey's The Lone Star Ranger, previously filmed by Fox in 1931 with George O'Brien in the lead. Kimbrough plays Texas Ranger Buck Dunne, assigned to round up a gang of bank robbers. The leader of the gang turns out to be the "respectable" Judge Longstreth (Jonathan Hale), making life hard for Dunne inasmuch as he's in love with Longstreth's niece Barbara (Sheila Ryan).

The Sundown Kid #

Description: Starring the engaging Donald Barry (nicknamed, for obvious reasons, "Red"), this average Republic Western was filmed on-location at the Iverson Ranch in Chatsworth, CA. Barry, a James Cagney look-alike, played a Pinkerton agent masquerading as a criminal in order to infiltrate a gang of counterfeiters that is using wealthy widow Lucy Randall (Helen MacKellar) as a front. Arriving at the Dawson ranch, the gang's hideout, Red discovers that the counterfeiting ring is headed by J. Richard Spencer (Ian Keith), the innocent Mrs. Randall's attorney, and Dawson himself (Ted Adams).

Houston and pal Al St. John come to the aid of their old mate Sheriff Smoky (Dennis Moore), who is having problem with a power hungry cattle rancher, Huxley (Charles "Slim" Whitaker). The crooning "Lone Rider" and his sidekick go up vs Huxley's strong ally, bandit leader Nora Mason (Rochelle) and her chief lieutenant (Archie Hall), an outlaw disguised as a monk. Nora is a cattle rustler, a fact she hides from her friend, innocent Kate Stewart (Wanda McKay), whose brother (Karl Hackett) is killed by rancher Huxley.

One of the independent mine-owners victimized by the crooks is cute Joan Manning (Patti McCarthy), making the Rangers' point a bit more pleasant.

The publisher and the gambler shoot every another and the retired ranger gets his ranch back.

Law of the Saddle #

Description: Law of the Saddle stars Bob Livingston as Rocky Cameron, aka "The Lone Rider". With his sidekick Fuzzy Q. Jones (Al St. John), Rocky rides into a tiny city plagued by cattle rustlers. He can expect no support from the Law, since the sheriff is as crooked as the Yellow Brick Road. In fact, the sheriff is the head of the rustlers, meaning that Rocky's really got a dilemma on his hands this time out. The villain in Law of the Saddle is played by Lane Chandler, a former silent-film cowboy star who sustained his career into the 1960s by specializing in stubble-chinned heavies.

Unbeknownst to the citizenry, the railroad is planning to build tracks through city and Benton is attempting to safe the land by scaring off the settlers.

Description: A would-be Western epic soundly defeated by an almost nonexistent budget, West of Texas was the third of 22 "Texas Rangers" oaters released by Gower Gulch company PRC from 1942-1945 in an attempt to compete with Republic's The Three Mesqueteers and Monogram's "Rough Riders" and "Range Busters." Rangers Tex Wyatt (Dave "Tex" O'Brien) and Jim Steele (James Newill) arrive in Gabe's Crossing, NM, to capture Bent Yeager (Henry Hall), a rancher accused of sabotaging the progress of the railroad. As it turns out, railroad representative Bart Calloway (Robert Barron) and lawyer Conlon (Tom London) have falsified land surveys so it appears that Bent's property is on government land.

Gunsmoke Mesa #

Released 9/1/1944

Description: The Texas Rangers ride again in the PRC oater Gunsmoke Mesa. As in earlier series entries, the rangers are played by Jim Newill (the handsome one), Dave O'Brien (the athletic one) and Guy "Panhandle" Wilkerson (the funny one). The villain is the appropriately called Henry Black (Jack Ingram), guardian of the young heir to a gold mine. Since Black was responsible for orphaning told heir, he has no reservations about knocking off the child as well-but the Texas Rangers aren't about to allow that happen. Better photographed than most PRC westerns, Gunsmoke Mesa was lensed by the prolific and efficient Ira H. Morgan.

Crooked saloon owner Red Hayden (I. Stanford Jolley) believes him at first but then the true Spade (Jack Ingram) turns up and all hell breaks loose. Guy Wilkerson and James Newill plays O'Brien's ranger colleagues, the latter performing Speed Hansen's "Someone Is Waiting", "Forget Me Not" and "When the Western Sun Is Sinking".

Then he gets Cannonball to lead the outlaw out of city where he hopes to beat a confession out of him. After clearing himself he plans to go after the boss of the gang.

Since the crooks contain such reliable disreputables as Charles Lord and John Merton, the nice guys really have their work slash out for them. But not to worry! The heroes are Johnny Mack Brown and Raymond Hatton, whose B-western track record is unbeatable. Land of the Outlaws was directed by Lambert Hillyer, whose sense of rhythm and pace had saved many other inexpensive oater.

Marshals Nevada Jack McKenzie and Sandy Hopkins, who organize the ranchers who take over the dead man's property and blast the dam releasing required water to all the ranchers. Nevada and Sandy, aided by the sheriff, round up Stanton, Condon and their gang members.
