Its exceptional cinematic quality offers a visual treat to a Quebec rarely seen before. This poetic take on childhood memory transcends easy nostalgia for a sincere celebration of life. Claude Demers returns to the working-class district of Montréal where he grew up, and instantly wonders: Why? The rest of Where I'm From forms the answer. Demers tries to relive all the experiences he had for the first time as a child, or at least understand them: the first novel he read and the power of language. His first awareness of death. The question of what is normal and what isn’t. The concept of wanting to leave, of having to leave.

Seven Songs for Malcolm X #

Released 10/1/1993

Description: The Black Audio Movie Collective’s seventh movie envisioned the death and life of the African American revolutionary as a seven part study in iconography as narrated by novelist Toni Cade Bambara and actor Giancarlo Espesito. Is this a good

Description: This is a masterpiece of found footage and archival cinema largely ignored. Using vast collections of photographs and family movies acquired in the flea stores and to expatriates, combined with photos produced by mass media and Franco official regime, this movie traces the history of the folks of Spain from civil fight to the raising mass culture and consumption in the '70s. The "particularity" is that all the chapters are distinguished among them by a famous song, similar with the content shown, with deals with the invented and surrealistic globe invented by folks to survive in starvation, repression and lack of freedom. This tactic takes that to the origins of cinema, to the cabaret, and to cinema as a colective party in the theater.

Lejos de los árboles #

Released 6/5/1972

Description: Held up for seven years before it was released, Far from the Trees seems like a excellent successor to Luis Buñuel's Land Without Bread. Like that earlier film, it is a type of impressionistic travelogue that shows a Spain far from the beaten paths of the tourist resorts; not only poverty but the persistence of superstitions and occult beliefs captured by the movie rebuke the photo of a forward-looking, modern Spain that by the 60s was being promoted by the Franco regime. Esteva Grewe largely allows the photos and juxtapositions to speak for themselves, giving the movie a lyrical feeling that somewhat softens its social criticism - though obviously not enough for the censors.

Kinder #

Released 3/6/2011

Description: In Bettina Büttner’s exquisitely lucid documentary Kinder (Kids), childhood dysfunction, loneliness, and pent-up emotion run wild at an all-boys group home in southern Germany. The kids interned here contain ten-year-olds Marvin and Tommy. Marvin, fiddling with a mini plastic Lego sword, explains matter-of-factly to the camera, “This is a knife. You test it to slash stomachs open.” Dennis, who is even younger, is seen in a hysteric fit, mimicking some pornographic scene. Men will be boys, but innocence is disproportionately spare here. Selecting not to dwell on the harsh specifics, Büttner reveals the disconcerting manner in which traumatic episodes can manifest themselves in the mundane — a minigame of Lego, Hide and Seek, or Truth or Dare. Filmed in lapidary black-and-white, Büttner’s fascinating movie sheds light on childhood from the boys’ characteristically disadvantaged perspective — one not yet totally cognizant — leaving much ethically to ponder over.

Dreaming Nicaragua #

Released 5/8/2010

Description: DREAMING NICARAGUA is a movie about HOPE. It's about love for the dignity and courage of the human spirit that, even immersed in uttermost tragic conditions, wars for a better life, and in this case, with a friendly SMILE. DREAMING is a sensitive and lyrical portrayal of four kids living in extreme poverty in Nicaragua. The movie takes us beyond their hardships and gives voice to the youngsters, who are surprisingly funny, hopeful, and optimistic. A traveling art teacher provides a secure arena for our four unlikely protagonists to express their innermost thoughts. When painting, the children momentarily escape the stresses of their reality into a globe of dreams and ideas, a stark contrast to their lives outside: a vicious cycle of hunger, kid labor, and violence. Despite the extreme circumstances, the kids and their families face their lives with an inspiring unity, strength and humor.
