Description: This true, astonishing storyline of what Lord Leopold II did in the Congo was forgotten for over 50 years. "Congo: White King, Red Rubber, Black Death" describes how Lord Leopold II of Belgium turned the Congo into his personal colony between 1885 and 1908. Under his control, Congo became a gulag labour camp of shocking brutality. Leopold posed as the protector of Africans fleeing Arab slave-traders but, in reality, he carved out an empire based on terror to harvest rubber. From the mid-1880s and lasting for nearly 40 years, an estimated 10 million Congolese were killed under Leopold's reign. The madness only came to an end thanks to the efforts of British journalist and humanitarian E.D. Morel, who exposed the human rights abuses in Congo and published photographs of the mutilated Congolese.

Works of Calder #

Released 1/1/1950

Description: The movie starts with a sun materializing out of the emptiness of space. In the first of three sequences we see different photos from nature vs music: the sky, trees, leaves, a bird, water, sand, a beach. A tiny man wanders along the beach observing the natural globe around him. He walks and presently comes to a house and peers inside. The second sequence has no music. The narrator speaks of sculptor Alexander Calder and his work, as we see Calder in his workshop, cutting and creating unusual shapes, and seeing the resultant artworks. The last sequence has melody as we view photos of Calder's work. However, actually they are intercut with photos from nature so that we understand that Calder's inspiration is the natural globe around him. The movie ends as it began, with an photo of the sun, actually fading into the sky.

Hollywood: The Dream Factory #

Released 1/1/1972

Description: MGM Studios, which was formed the effect of a merger between Metro Pictures (owned by the Loews Company) and the Goldwyn Company, was the premier Hollywood film studio from the mid 1920's to the end of the 1950's, when a court ruling dissolved the close association between film studios and film theaters leading to the end of the studio system that controlled what happened in Hollywood, and when tv became a rival form of available entertainment. Led by Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg but not with obstacles, MGM was the greatest of the studios at perpetuating the dream that anything was possible, both in front of the cameras and in the lives of Hollywood royalty, namely the film stars. Within a generation, films became the biggest cash making form of entertainment. The public went to see films in droves even during the depression, wanted to learn about and be close to the private lives of the Hollywood rich and famous, and aspired to be part of that Hollywood royalty.

Sunset Boulevard: A Look Back Reviews:

This making of documentary details footage from the film, stills (including those of the aborted original opening sequence), and interviews. It's never explained totally why Louis B Mayer found the movie so distasteful, though it is interesting that William Holden is described as much as a hasbeen as Gloria Swanson was when he was cast. We receive the usual divided opinions about Sunset's Academy Award losses in favor of All About Eve, but also Nancy Olson (as the only surviving cast member) says a funny storyline of how Holden's wife yelled "Cut. Dammit, cut" at the long take Wilder used for the balcony stage embrace. We also receive Glenn Close commenting on the soon Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

This is included with 2002 DVD release of "Sunset Blvd". It's basically a VERY short (25 minutes) documentary of the making of the classic. There's nothing here that I really didn't know already but there are a several interesting bits here and there. It does go into the fact that Louis Mayer HATED the movie when he saw it. He went to director Bill Wilder and said him off and Wilder responded . That's interesting but we're never said WHY Mayer hated the movie and what Wilder's response was! The most interesting bits here are of Nancy Olson (the only surviving cast member) talking about making the film. She's full of life, children her wholesome photo and has a several tiny interesting stories. Glenn Close (who was in the musical ver of "Sunset") also pops up with a several comments. I love Close but really--she's not needed. She really has nothing to add about the film itself. So this isn't an in depth expose on the film but a mildly interesting tiny documentary about the making of it.

Sure there's a several tidbits that can be learned from watching this tiny puff piece on a nice film (such as how the shot of the swimming pool from below was pulled off), but for the most part it seems lacking in substance, the worst offender is without a doubt Glenn Close, as she seems to add nothing to the featurette, absolutely nothing. And for the life of me, I truly can't see why she was even in it, except maybe to pad out the running time. And yes I know she was in the Andrew Llyod Weber musical, but i absolutely LOATHE Weber. This 25-minute featurette can be found as an additional on the Unique Edition DVD of "Sunset Blvd."My Grade: C-
