Description: A filmmaker’s self-portrait, asking difficult questions of herself and of us. Invoking Aurore Clément as a type of stand-in or proxy, a glamorous counterpart to Akerman who sports a drawn-on moustache. What is cinema for? Who is it for? If the Mosaic prohibition on making graven photos contains movie images, then where does that leave a Jewish filmmaker?

The Ancient Woods #

Released 3/18/2018

Description: A poetic and atypical nature movie about the different inhabitants of an old-growth forest, on the ground, in the air and in the water. There's no commentary, only the rich, almost palpable sounds of the forest and the magical cases captured by the camera. Although we might sometimes be puzzled as to what's now happening—a mating ritual or the begin of a fight?—the lack of explanation leaves zone for us to associate freely and simply experience the images. The movie offers a close-up view of a wide range of creatures—such as the insect that appears out of the melting snow, gradually starts to transport and impatiently waits until all its legs are gratis so it can fly away. The scale of the portraits is sometimes grand and at another times modest, but everytime filmed with precision, whether in daylight or at night. Time doesn’t seem to matter in this extraordinary piece of slow cinema.

He clears thousands of roadside bombs, mines and vehicle bombs, knowing that each time he cuts a wire it should cost him his life—which he seems to search less necessary than the lives of others. In 2014, by this time having lost a leg, he begins working for the Kurdish Peshmerga, disarming boobytraps left behind by Daesh in and around Mosul. An enthusiastic home video maker, Fakhir collects hundreds of hours of footage of his day-to-day work.

Description: It was a scandal that shook the British establishment to its roots. In June 1951, the government was forced to admit that two Foreign Office diplomats had disappeared. One of them, Donald Maclean, had slipped through their fingers three days before he was due to be questioned for passing secrets to the Russians. The other, Guy Burgess, was a total surprise. He was a charming, intelligent Etonian, with strong mates everywhere. And lovers too - at a time when homosexuality was illegal, Burgess made no secret of his sexual tastes. He turned out to be the most flamboyant of a ring of privileged Cambridge students who had secretly joined the Communists in the 1930s, disgusted by their own government's privacy of appeasing Hitler. With the support of newly declassified documents, George Carey's movie shows how the most celebrated spy ring of the 20th century grew out of the class system, sexual hypocrisy and the sheer incompetence of some folks who then ran Britain.

Sunset Boulevard: A Look Back Reviews:

This making of documentary details footage from the film, stills (including those of the aborted original opening sequence), and interviews. It's never explained totally why Louis B Mayer found the movie so distasteful, though it is interesting that William Holden is described as much as a hasbeen as Gloria Swanson was when he was cast. We receive the usual divided opinions about Sunset's Academy Award losses in favor of All About Eve, but also Nancy Olson (as the only surviving cast member) says a funny storyline of how Holden's wife yelled "Cut. Dammit, cut" at the long take Wilder used for the balcony stage embrace. We also receive Glenn Close commenting on the soon Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

This is included with 2002 DVD release of "Sunset Blvd". It's basically a VERY short (25 minutes) documentary of the making of the classic. There's nothing here that I really didn't know already but there are a several interesting bits here and there. It does go into the fact that Louis Mayer HATED the movie when he saw it. He went to director Bill Wilder and said him off and Wilder responded . That's interesting but we're never said WHY Mayer hated the movie and what Wilder's response was! The most interesting bits here are of Nancy Olson (the only surviving cast member) talking about making the film. She's full of life, children her wholesome photo and has a several tiny interesting stories. Glenn Close (who was in the musical ver of "Sunset") also pops up with a several comments. I love Close but really--she's not needed. She really has nothing to add about the film itself. So this isn't an in depth expose on the film but a mildly interesting tiny documentary about the making of it.

Sure there's a several tidbits that can be learned from watching this tiny puff piece on a nice film (such as how the shot of the swimming pool from below was pulled off), but for the most part it seems lacking in substance, the worst offender is without a doubt Glenn Close, as she seems to add nothing to the featurette, absolutely nothing. And for the life of me, I truly can't see why she was even in it, except maybe to pad out the running time. And yes I know she was in the Andrew Llyod Weber musical, but i absolutely LOATHE Weber. This 25-minute featurette can be found as an additional on the Unique Edition DVD of "Sunset Blvd."My Grade: C-
