SHE COULDN'T SAY NO is very well done tiny "B" film comedy from 1940 from Warner Bros., a studio not known for comedies "A" or "B". This 62-minute movie stars Eve Arden and Roger Pryor as young lawyers in love who search themselves representing various sides of a breach of promise suit filed by elderly spinster Vera Lewis vs her 15-year beau Clem Bevans, a wealthy 80-year-old who can never tell yes. This tiny programmer fully foreshadows the 1949 classic ADAM'S RIB with Hepburn and Tracy although most intriguingly every lawyer here represents the opposite sex client. Perhaps with a bigger budget and revised script, the producers of SHE COULDN'T SAY NO might have whipped up a classic themselves but there is much to play in this tiny gem particularly the performances. It is a unique treat to see Eve Arden testing a very rare starring role in a movie rather than the acerbic sidekick that was her specialty. Eve gets a bit of a glamour treatment too with sharp clothes and blonde hair and is superbly cast as the sharp as whip professional woman. One can hardly tell the films wasted her but she shows here she might have given Rosalind Russell a run for her cash as the screen's top businesswoman comedienne in related films. And how great to see Clem Bevans and Vera Lewis in very huge helping roles; both hero performers usually played tiny unbilled bits. (Of note too, Bevans at 61 is cast as an 80-year-old while Miss Lewis is 68 and plays someone perhaps a several years younger.) There's also the unbelievable Ziffie Tilbury, one of the oldest hero users of the period testing Vera's mother. This is one of those tiny unheralded gems Turner Classic Films unearths actually and then that shows why this channel is so special.
Eve Arden ("Our Miss Brooks" TV Present in the 1950's, and many sidekick roles like in Mildred Pierce) stars as one of the two lawyers on a breach of promise case. Fun, happy, upbeat, much easier to watch than the Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy ver to come later. Quick paced script, its only about an hour long; Each role here is a hero to laugh along with - the farmer kind bachelor, the judge, Eve Arden's assistant, Cliff Edwards, who can also sing and enjoy a mean ukulele. Vera Lewis, the spinster, made TONS of movies, about half of them silents. Eve's law partner Roger Pryor does a fine job in a smaller role, appears to have stopped making films in the 1940s. I guess due to the bigger names in the 1949 version, that is the one shown most often on air. I prefer this version.
I am not crazy about the game of the movie since it really does not connect with the film itself. However, the movie itself is a tiny gem.I watched this simply to see the unbelievable Eve Arden in a starring role rather than her usual helping user status. Her wit is razor sharp as always, and her beauty is on display too.The notion that she would agree being her husband's receptionist when she too has a law degree is a bit silly, but it was 1940 and a girl was more willing to do a thing like that, especially "to catch her man." The court situation as presented was fun to watch, and the helping users all added much to the film. I also enjoyed seeing the tiny city aspect shown. It's a fun tiny movie to see for its innocence.
