Description: Jean-Claude Rousseau's Jeune femme à sa fenêtre lisant une lettre is not only his first medium-length film, but a possibility to explore this filmmaker whom Jean-Marie Straub has called, along with Frans Van de Staak and Peter Nestler, the best working in Europe. With this newly restored print there is also a chance to explore the relationship between Rousseau's art of filming and Jan Vermeer's popular painting. As Prosper Hillairet wrote in 1988, four years after Rousseau had complete Jeune femme ... (for the first time as we know today): «Without adopting the usual systematic spirit and form of cinéma structurel, Rousseau presents us with easy photos and leaves it at that. Keeps the photo in hand. A minimalist and ascetic expression of cinema: a shot that lasts.»

Seeds of Freedom Reviews:

This is the greatest movie that I've seen (out of the many that I have seen) in explaining the history of agriculture and the role of seed up to today with the war between corporate chemical industrial agriculture and organic biodiverse agriculture. It's a David and Goliath storyline and the future of the world's meal supply is at stake. Selecting both experts like Vandana Shiva and farmers from around the world, the movie gives a global view of a global problem. The narration by Jeremy Irons is just right and to receive the notification across it was the proper decision of have narration as well as the numerous brief trenchant 'talking heads'. In a half hour this brilliant, very well written and constructed movie lays out the war lines.
