Second Glance is basically "It's a Unbelievable Life" if that storyline had been written by a drunk spider monkey with brain damage.Daniel is a whiny Christian high school child who likes to pout about how all the non-Christian children are having sooo much fun and he's not. What he really means is that the woman he likes doesn't like him back, and he thinks he should fully hit that if he wasn't a Christian. And, as it turns out, HE'S RIGHT.Because, you see, one night Daniel lays in bed whining to himself that he wishes he'd never become a believer, and God was apparently so bored that day that he arranges for Daniel to wake up in a bizzaro globe where he was never a Christian. In this bizzaro world, Daniel is not only dating the woman he was crushing on, he's also cheating on her with the girlfriend of one of the football players. Daniel stumbles around in bizzaro world, never really quite grasping that he's in an alternate universe, and winds up looking like an idiot more than once. So, how is the globe various thanks to one whiny teenage man not being a Christian? Well, for starters, his parents are divorced and his younger sister never existed. What should those thing possibly have to do with him not being a Christian? Well, the angel of the storyline (who is the worst actor in this really poorly acted movie) explains that in the true world, Daniel's parents were going through some difficult times when he was a kid, and it was Daniel's prayers that kept them together. Because he wasn't a Christian, in bizzaro world, his parents split up and never conceived his sister.Second Glance Lesson Number 1: Kids, if your parents receive a divorce, it's because you didn't pray difficult enough. So it's not so much that they split up because of you, it's that they split up because God is punishing you for not being devout enough. In conversations with another students, Daniel also finds out that the football user whose girlfriend he's banging beat a mate of Daniel's within an inch of his life out of jealousy. And it's Daniel's fault. Because in the true world, he gave the football guy a pep talk about not being jealous.Second Glance Lesson Number 2: Kids, you are responsible for each act of violence that happens at your school, because if you were a better Christian, you would have been able to prevent it through the power of words. In the true world, Daniel is the head of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes club. In bizzaro world, the club doesn't exist, and this is played as a tragedy on par with the another injuries and deaths in the movie.Second Glance Lesson Number 3: Kids, begin a Christian club at your school, or you'll create baby Jesus cry. And, in what is easy the most underhanded transport the film makes to test and force your ice cold heart to feel, Daniel finds out that the child he was mentoring, who in the true globe was type of creepily enthusiastic about Jesus, is dead. Why is the child dead? Because since Daniel wasn't there to influence him to embrace Jesus, the child committed suicide.Second Glance Lesson Number 4: Kids, if someone you know kills themselves, it's your fault. Also, the English teacher from the high school, who has the only decent one-liners in the movie, isn't a teacher in bizzaro world, and is instead working as a waiter in some diner. Why? Because in bizzaro world, Daniel is just like all the ungrateful, spoiled SINNERS at the school. Without his example to give the teacher hope, the teacher quit out of frustration and is actually miserable.Second Glance Lesson Number 5: Kids, you are not only totally responsible for the choices and behaviors of your peers, but also for the choices and behaviors of adults and authority figures. If an authority figure is unhappy or makes terrible decisions, it's because you weren't a nice enough person. And that's this film in a rather wordy nutshell. If you're not a nice tiny Christian, then when things fall apart in the lives of folks around you, it's your fault. This film claims to be an inspirational tale about how one person's actions can "influence" others. But it's now an elaborate guilt trip designed to slap children across the face to test and receive them to fall in line. This film is awful. It was type of fun to see baby David White, but that's not enough of a reason to watch this turkey. Steer clear, and don't allow anyone else create the mistake of inflicting this thing on themselves.
A several of my fellow writers have covered this movie's plot elements so I will stick to some of the cuff remarks...1. This is entertaining - but not for the reasons you'd think. It's cheesy but somehow still watchable.2. Tamra, Daniel's love interest has to be about thirty. The Christian woman that Dan ignores is method cuter.3. Muriel stole his shirt from Mr. Spock. Also, if my guardian angel looks like Muriel I'm going to have to apply for a transfer.4. Okay... so apparently... Dan is responsible for his parents' divorce! What type of horrible guilt trip is that?! Muriel tells that it was Dan's prayers that kept his parents together. I just thought that was absolutely ridiculous. Listen, I can pray for my parents as much as I wish but the only method they'll stay together is if they decide they're going to do it.5. I'll echo the atheist's comments on how this film portrays non-Christians. Apparently they're all slovenly bullies.6. For something positive - David White is a decent actor. He gives the film a tiny bit of credibility, even if he is the only one. He cute much holds this movie together on his own.
You will laugh, but for all the wrong reasons. This film is horribly written, produced, and poorly acted. If I should give it negative stars, I would. The whole production of this film just seems fully phoned in.The only favorable reviews you will see are from the "Yay Jesus" crowd. Personally, I am not interested in watching a film for salvation, I am watching it for entertainment, which this movie fails horribly at delivering. If you wish to watch a film simply to laugh at how terrible it is, this is the one for you.
