Screen Actors Reviews:

John Nesbitt narrates this MGM short about the actors who appear on the screen, portraying them as ordinary people who have a wide tons of occupations when they're not pretending to be some one else in the movies. It's a treat for fanatics who like to enjoy "spot the star", since it not only shows leading users like Clark Gable, but bit users and stunt men.Although it is directed without credit by John Elias -- whose only directorial effort was this; his regular job was as a production manager for MGM's cartoon division -- the principal focus could be on editor Frank Hull, whose last, uncredited work is this. Hull was born in 1882 in Kansas, and he edited his first picture, for Goldwyn, in 1920. He was employed mostly by MGM, with a three-year sojourn at Fox in the early 1930s. He died in 1968.

This movie short was made with the cooperation of the major movie studios and is one of a string of publicity shorts made about the movie industry itself. This public relations movie purports to present that actors are cute much like anyone else--with normal hobbies and interests beyond the studios.I liked this movie but considering I am a large old movie buff, it isn't all that surprising. If anyone is a fanatic of Hollywood's golden age, then they'll probably love seeing some candid shots of the stars at enjoy or working jobs another than acting. The only trouble is that, at times, the movie seemed more like publicity and I wondered just how real all these supposedly candid shots were. Was it true or just a put-on by publicity agents? I guess we'll never know.By the way, of all the supposedly candid movie clips the one that rather creeped me out was seeing Dan Duryea as a cub scout leader. For those of you who don't remember Duryea, his movie roles were sort of like a combination of Steve Buscemi and Christopher Walken!!! Would anyone SERIOUSLY allow this guy be alone with their kids! I am sure he was a great guy in true life, but his persona made this seem really, really strange!

Screen Actors (1950) *** (out of 4) Movie buffs will certainly receive a kick out of this short, which tries to present how actors are just like true people. The movie talks about the early days of actors when they had to travel by stagecoach and then we receive to see how some popular faces like to play their gratis time. We see Clark Gable on a farm, Lionel Barrymore writing melody and we also receive to see Donna Reed, Gene Autry, Joan Crawford, Donald Crisp, Bing Crosby, Ava Gardner, Greer Garson, Joel McCrae, Gene Kelly and many others. If you're a fanatic of movie and like seeing major stars together then you'll receive a kick out of this short even though the majority of the material is from another movies. We also receive a brief look at how the SAG meets as well as some room donated by popular actors for those just starting out.
