Description: Over the course of more than two decades, Birmingham's UB40 have become global ambassadors for reggae, a adventure captured perfectly on The Collection. This programme is split into two main sections: a 26-track video collection and a documentary detailing their 20th anniversary concert in September 2001. Forgoing chronology in favour of a more random approach, the video selection is slightly disjointed on a visual level, leaping from decade to decade within the zone of a couple of tracks. While they have never made a truly nice video (most detail the band lip-synching in different territories around the world) UB40 have certainly been prolific over the years. "One In Ten" and "Food for Thought", their earliest work, represented the sound of young, multicultural Britain just as well as the more lauded Specials. And while there have perhaps been a several too many covers in newest times, it is difficult to deny the effectiveness of "Red, Red Wine" and "Kingston Town".

This film isn't a filmed rendition of Rollins' classic album, but rather a documentary that delves into the boy and his work, and details as its centerpiece a 1986 performance of his "Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra," a stunning work, which as far as I know, is currently accessible nowhere else. Directed by Robert Mugge, who's known for his insightful melody documentaries (on blues, on Robert Johnson, Hawaiian music, zydeco and bluegrass), this is a classic work that allows the boy to explain himself, and has inserts from critics that support you to gain a greater insight into what you're seeing on the screen. Impressive, and (dare I tell it) educational. We receive nice a totally rounded portrait of one of jazz's best users ever, a boy who pursued spirit as much as he pursued music.
I rented this expecting a live concert featuring some or most of the songs from Sonny's classic album of the same name. It is instead a 1986 mixed bag of items simply borrowing on the title.
