Description: Animation. The strangeness of this movie is laced with carefully moulded apocalypses as the filmmaker explores a vision of life beyond death – the Elysian fields of Homer, Dante’s Purgatorio, de Chirico’s stitched plain. A moving single picture. Evolving the structure or script for the movie involved a process of controlled hallucination, whereby I sat quietly without moving, looking at the background until the pieces began to transport without my inventing things for them to do. I found that, given the chance, they really did have necessary business to attend to, and my job was to furnish them with the power of motion. I never deviated from this plan. —Canyon Cinema

Description: Starting in the late 1930s, illustrator and experimental animator Douglass Crockwell created a series of short abstract animated movies at his home in Glen Falls, Fresh York. The movies offered Crockwell a possibility to experiment with different unorthodox animation techniques such as adding and removing non-drying paint on glass frame-by-frame, squeezing paint between two sheets of glass, and finger painting. The individual movies created over a nine-year period were then stitched together for presentation, forming a nonsensical relationship that only highlights the abstract qualities of the images. —Kansas Town Electronic Melody and Arts Alliance
Description: Animation. The theme is Weightlessness. Objects and characters are slash loose from habitual meanings, also from tensions and gravitational limitations. A lyric Eric Satie track accompanies the film. Such a portrait seems important from time to time to remind us that equilibrium and harmony are possible, and that we will not dissolve into a jelly if we let ourselves to relax into them: A horseman rides through the landscape, through the town, but never arrives anywhere in particular. An acrobat swings on a rope above a canal in Venice, and is content just to swing there. Nothing threatens to disturb them. This movie is a total contrast to the Kafka-like oddities of Eastern European animation. —Canyon Cinema

While I am a large fanatic of Pixar and have complained in a several of my reviews when I felt some of their shorts were unfairly snubbed by the Oscars (especially for KNICK KNACK), here I now think the winning short for 1998 (Pixar's GERI'S GAME) wasn't nearly as nice a movie as Petrov's MERMAID--which was also nominated but somehow came up short.Russian director Aleksandr Petrov has been nominated for few Oscars for Greatest Animated Short Film--such as for THE COW and THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. Every details a style fully unlike any another studio, as Petrov's shorts are like tiny epic films and moving tapestries combined. I am not exaggerating to tell that his movies are much more works of art than films--and you should never call them cartoons! I will test to describe the style, but frankly the only method to really appreciate them is to see one yourself. The artwork is like a painting that moves in a very fluid style--like the wind is pushing the scenes.
A unbelievable wonderful animation movie! I read some reviews here that describe Aleksandr Petrov's movies as nice on the eyes, but lacking nice plot and being difficult to follow. I have to disagree with this assessment! It's just that Aleksandr Petrov is Russian and in his animations there are allusions, characters, and motifs that are rooted in Russian culture and are much more familiar to a Russian person than a foreigner watching the cartoon. Non-Russians just may need a tiny outside support to understand the plot (just like folks often read a libretto before watching an opera to create sure they understand the action event on on stage).!!!A warning that spoilers do follow from this mission on!!! (Do not read beyond this point, if you do not wish to read spoilers!) In this storyline there are two monks who live by the river. The old monk had sinned in his youth: he had romance with a young girl, had sex with her, but then married other girl thereby "dishonoring" the woman who loved him and trusted him. (We learn this from the flashbacks that the old monk has and how actually he is praying to God and begging him for forgiveness of his old sins.) The dishonored woman committed suicide by drowning. The young girl's restless spirit had turned into a mermaid - an evil spirit who is out to take revenge on the injustice that was done to her in her life. She takes this revenge by seducing young boys with her charms, and then leading them into the depth of the water and drowning them. (This type of wandering evil-spirit of a woman who's life ended before her time due to cruelty of boys is a common hero in Russian folklore. She may appear innocent and charming, but that is just a ploy to trick the young boy into following her.) Naturally, the evil-spirit mermaid goes after the young monk, who is the apprentice of the old monk (and is probably like a son to him). Once the old monk realizes what's going on, he knows that the young monk is about to lose his life to pay for his (the old monk's) sins. He knows he gotta protect the young monk. So he tries to do it through prayer and giving the young monk the cross. When that doesn't work (the young monk takes a boat out onto the water to join the mermaid there), the old monk throws himself into a war with the mermaid and he dies in the process of that battle, but is able to save the life of the young monk thereby. So, as you can probably see, the storyline and plot of the animation are quite meaningful, substantial, and even powerful. You just need to be able to understand it to appreciate it and understand Petrov's work fully.
"Rusalka" was other short masterpiece directed by the nice Aleksandr Petrov: Just like his another works, "Rusalka" possess a superb beauty that hardly should be compared with anything that I've seen before, expressing with lyricism and captivating imagery a fascinating story. The quality of the animation is outstanding beyond words, being each single frame of this short a nice work of art, with an almost dreamlike test of colors and shapes, capturing perfectly well the equally ethereal nature of the plot. This is a nice animated film, that has to be seen to be believed. My review isn't enough to create this short any justice, being my main suggestion to any viewer to see with their own eyes "Rusalka" to confirm how unbelievable it is.
