Description: Produced as part of a cinematic magazine, “The Flower of all Cities” provides a rare example of the work of Palestinian photographer and cinematographer, Hani Jawharieh (1939–1976), one of the founding fathers of Palestinian cinema. Using the sound track, “The Flowers of all Cities,” a popular song by Fairuz, the movie presents a harmonious picture of Palestinian civil life in Jerusalem that is disturbed by the Israeli army’s occupation of the town following the 1967 war. Although essentially a propaganda movie by the Jordanian Ministry of Culture, the movie captures the essence of the period, the method in which Palestinians and Arabs viewed Jerusalem, and their rage at its occupation by the Israeli army. Given newest events, the movie continues to keep contemporary relevance.
Description: This movie focuses on an old Palestinian boy who is the topics of artist Ismail Shammout’s painting Memories and Fire. The movie unravels his memories using archival photographs and Shammout’s own paintings to say the storyline of Palestinian experience and resistance. By simply using a montage of visuals and sounds and avoiding narration, Shammout adopts a style that was used by early Soviet filmmakers who wished to communicate across language boundaries, creating a movie that offered an non-verbal narrative of the Palestinian cause. The movie was screened at a tons of festivals in the former Soviet Union and won a prize at the International Leipzig Documentary and Short Movie Week for Cinema and Tv in 1973. Recently restored and digitized.
Description: In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon and occupied its capital, Beirut. The movie is a rare example of a PLO movie made after the PLO’s departure from Beirut. It documents the burned and destroyed cultural and educational centers from which Israelis stole films, photographs, and historical and contemporary manuscripts. It contains interviews with key members of the Palestinian cultural stage such as Mahmoud Darwish and Ismail Shammout and those in charge of cultural and educational centers that were destroyed.
Description: Ismail Shammout, an artist who is primarily known for his paintings, also served as director of the Cultural Arts Section of the PLO and worked with the organization’s Movie Unit in the 1970s. In this short film, Shammout records a solidarity song by the Palestinian Egyptian singer Zeinab Shaath to announce the most urgent call of Palestine. The song and the words of Kamal Nasser that break through the ballad continue to keep striking relevance today. Lyrics by Lalitha Punjabi.

The movie reflects on his life through interviews with family, colleagues, and his own cinematography, including the moment of his death while filming for the Unit in 1976. Although the movie has soon been attributed to Mustafa Abu Ali, the Unit’s way of work was to describe everyone as a collective of “workers,” and we see this in the movie titles, which collectively list the names of all those who participated as a non-hierarchical collective. Through this reflection on Jawharieh, we are offered an understanding of the workings of the Palestine Movie Unit and its international connections.
