What is clear is that the boys are increasingly infantalized as Chikako grows up. They call her Hanako, in tribute to one's absent daughter. The pic's visual results are somewhat Godardian, with found music, disjointed cutting and a strange finish involving a stuffed teddy bear, along with some Bunuel-like sexual motifs that add to the confusion and also dilute the prurience. In the end, though, the characters don't transport forward enough to be more than ciphers.

This short student movie was made circa 1997 when David Gordon Green was about 21 or 22. The cinematography is terrible but the script, acting, and direction are all indicative of greatness to come, specifically in the form of "George Washington", a movie not dissimilar to "Pleasant Grove" in most ways. The writing suffers from a lack of polish and maturity, and while sections of the script are outstanding it doesn't become a satisfying movie by the end. Still, at 15 mins in length "Pleasant Grove" is an interesting enough student short, which isn't of much interest to folks who dislike David Gordon Green, but fanatics of his will wish to see this (and probably have already done so).6/10
