But it also caught the mood of the times, since the mid-1950s was the height of both the Cold Fight and nuclear paranoia, as depicted (sometimes allegorically) in such American movies as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and The Wonderful Shrinking Boy (1957)."

The movie PEDRO is a combination of documentary and cinematic drama, and as such it should have been an awkward pastiche, an attempt to honor the memory of a brave young boy who courageously faced classrooms of kids and many various public forums as a boy living with HIV, offering the general public the occasion to learn about the illness in hopes of preventing its spread. Instead what happens is this movie as written by Dustin Lance Black after a storyline by Paris Barclay and as directed with sensitive taste by Nickname Oceano is a fully satisfying drama that just happens to add movie clips form the well-known life of Pedro Zamora to enhance the dignity of this story. After a rather startling opening sequence the movie starts in Cuba as families lined up to cross to America: among those families was the Zamora mother (Teresa Hernández), father (Anibal O. Lleras) and only three of their children, including young Pedro and Mily. They settle in Miami where Pedro grows up remembering his past in Cuba and concentrating on his globe of fantasy with his beloved mother. Pedro matures to a teenager (Alex Loynaz), a handsome and affable young lad whose sexual preference is men. At the tender age of 17 he is found to be HIV positive and his sister Mily (Justina Machado) pledges to stay by his side through all of his trials. Pedro is encouraged by different folks to come out about his case and indeed he does, flying to San Francisco to be on the True Folks reality show. There he makes mates with his fellow 'roommates' (especially Judd/ Hale Appleman and Pam/ Jenn Liu). On the show, in front of the public tv audience he can be himself - a normal young guy who happens to have AIDS. He meets Sean Sasser (DaJuan Johnson) and they eventually marry on the tv series. Pedro becomes a very famous speaker and advocate for AIDS prevention. Once the series is over Pedro becomes ill and goes from a Fresh York hospital to his home in Miami, diagnosed with an incurable manifestation of his disease. The manner in which Pedro and his family cope with all aspects of Pedro's life closes the film. Alex Loynaz is perfect as Pedro, if not the magnetic personality of his real counterpart, and his scenes with Justina Machado are particularly profound and deeply touching. The whole cast is well chosen and offers various insights to the life of Pedro Zamora. There won't be a dry eye after watching this tender film. It is well worth spending time getting to know other unsung hero. Grady Harp
I thought the film did a nice job of portraying the realities of HIV in the early 90's while showing some restraint. The actor Loyenz gave a believable, powerful performance as Pedro. In the early days of MTV's reality present the True Globe it didn't take much to become celebrity and Pedro used that to educate and promote the HIV/AIDS causes as he had before joining the cast. Sadly like so many in those times he died of his affliction but not before leaving his tag on not only family and mates but a nation and my hope is this movie reminds us all of what came before and what we still gotta do, secure sex for gays and straights, supports prevent the spread of STD's, HIV, Aids and prevents unwanted pregnancy.
This film seemed more of a puff piece for the RW series rather than Pedro. I think it was made for few reasons even though some are altruistic but there are still others that are not. The True Globe is declining in ratings and this transport seems to attempt to tell the present is very socially conscious and culturally relevant. I think any ties those ideas ended with the Miami season. The London series didn't do well in the ratings and the Miami only improved them from being more sexual and provocative. Actually it's just trash TV.Pedro was a very accomplished AIDS activist prior to the show, Pedro the film portrayed the present as his sole accomplishment. He advocated adults to create more responsible decisions - hardly the message given by the more newest series. He spoke in front of congress and made few national appearances on TV prior to his stint in the RW house.I wasn't pleased with the amount of time given to his bio, they worked his life around the series. They even recreated scenes from the present - which is ridiculous.I think they portrayed his death wrong, and didn't reflect what now happened. They didn't really discuss the problems Sean Sasser dealt with following Pedro's deteriorating health. They only provided tiny references to the difficulties experienced between Sean Sasser and Pedro's family. If they really wanted to do a service to Pedro's cause they'd repeat the in Memoriam unique they had following his death - It provided more biographical information. The speech played in the Special's credits elicits, in my opinion, more of a response then just the biographical notification in end credits of Pedro. You didn't receive the right message from the Film in comparison with the in Memoriam Special.
