Who Is Bernard Tapie? #

Released 9/8/2001

Description: This documentary says two stories simultaneously: it's a profile of Bernard Tapie, a wealthy boy who rises and falls spectacularly in French society and may be on the rise again; and, it's a look at Marina Zenovich's fascination with Tapie, behaving oddly in spite of her awareness that she's being irrational. Politicians, athletes, friends, companions, and journalists comment on Bernard's charm, his rise to prominence in sports and politics, and his subsequent problem with the law. Zenovich becomes fixated on her need to interview Tapie, becoming virtually a stalker in her quest.

Time in the Sun #

Released 1/1/1940

Description: Second attempt to make a detail movie out of the 200,000-plus feet of movie which Soviet film-maker Sergei Eisenstein shot during 1931-32 in Mexico for American socialist creator Upton Sinclair, his wife and a tiny company of investors. The projected film, to be named "Que Viva Mexico", was never finished due to exhaustion of funds and Stalin's demand that Eisenstein return to the USSR (he had been absent since 1929). The first attempt at editing the footage, in the USA, resulted in "Thunder Over Mexico", released in 1934. In 1940, Marie Seton, from the UK, acquired some of the footage from the Sinclairs in an attempt to create a better cutting according to Eisenstein's skeletal outline for the proposed film. This movie has apparently been lost.

Uomini, anni, vita #

Released 1/1/1990

Description: Using photos shot in Russia and Armenia from Globe Fight I to the 1930s and retrieved from a Soviet movie archive, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi constructed a meditative movie about the status of Armenians as a folks without a state. Inspired by the diary of Gianikian’s father, People, Years, Life uses rare footage depicting the region’s major historic events: the end of Tsarist Russia, violence in the Caucasus during Globe Fight I, the 1918 Armenian exodus from Azerbaijan. Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi’s treatment of the material manipulates the speed of the images, adds color and music, and magnifies different parts of the image, so that the movement of bodies across the frame starts to carry the weight of exile, mourning, dispossession.

Menstrual Man #

Released 4/30/2013

Description: Some people squirm at mention of a woman’s period…not Arunachalam Muruganantham. Considered a madman and pervert by his community, he ignores his detractors and makes his dream—low-cost sanitary pads made by and for rural Indian women—a reality. Using manually operated machines, Muruganantham’s microbusiness model is focused on something more necessary than profits: providing sustainable employment, hygiene and emancipation to girls who would otherwise go without. He’s a boy with a million-dollar idea—except cash has nothing to do with it. His target is to create a livelihood, not to collect wealth; to operate at a human scale, not a multinational one. Menstrual Boy is the inspiring storyline of a character who rises above poverty and a lack of education to become a superstar social entrepreneur in the business of breaking cultural taboos and re-inventing the economic pyramid. Muruganantham is leading a movement, not a company. And it’s spreading.

De son Appartement #

Released 7/4/2007

Description: The continuing demand for high standards is what sets Rouseau's work apart. What makes this movie distinctive is the method Rousseau explicitly returns to the source of his constructive inspiration. So here he is at home reciting «Bérénice» to himself, whilst going about his household chores. It verges on the comical: There are repeated shots of him obstinately trying to turn off a dripping tap, or the jubilant close up of bare feet carried away in performing a dance step or two. Combining art with life in such a way, that nothing is compartmentalised, nothing lost - that is the goal.
