Okay, Jose (1935) ** (out of 4) Warner two-reeler about a dimwitted salesman who is arrested in Mexico on suspicion of supporting a bandit escape from prison. The police give him a possibility to earn his freedom by letting him go (?!?!) so that he can capture the bandit. Yes, I too wondered why the guy just didn't leave on his own will since they didn't have anyone watching him and they just allow him walk out the front door. There was nothing keeping him from escaping himself but I guess if they had then this short would have came to an end. We receive some pretty scenery captured in Technicolor and this here is cute much the only reason to check this short out. Some of the desert territories look extremely nice and thankfully the print still includes most of its color. The current storyline is cute bland and boring and El Brendel's kind of humor just didn't work for me. There's some singing and dancing as well but again, it just comes off rather blah.
A WARNER BROTHERS VITAPHONE Short Subject.A Minnesota Swede finds himself in large problem in Mexico when he is forced to capture a notorious bandito.Dialect comedian El Brendel, who enlivened few movies in the 1930's, finds a nice outlet for his talent in OKAY, JOSÉ. The very silly plot - which contains Mexican melody & dancing - allows him to give hilarious impersonations of a mustachioed outlaw and a flirtatious blonde señorita. The eye-pleasing Technicolor photography is still vivid and bright.Often overlooked or neglected today, the one and two-reel short topics were helpful to the Studios as necessary training grounds for fresh or burgeoning talents, both in front & behind the camera. The dynamics for creating a successful short topics was fully various from that of a detail length film, something akin to writing a topnotch short storyline rather than a novel. Economical to produce in terms of both budget & schedule and capable of portraying a wide range of material, short topics were the excellent complement to the Studios' detail films.
The Vitaphone shorts were originally intended to be experimental and inspected out the fresh Warner Brothers sound system before they ultimately released "The Jazz Singer". Following the release of the film, they continued to create Vitaphone films...even after sound became the norm. So, it's very fitting that Vitaphone also inspected out a fresh innovation in their shorts as well--Three Color Technicolor. While there were earlier color systems (such as Cinecolor and Two Color Technicolor), they weren't real color but were made with a more primitive system where a blue-green and an orange-red strip overlapped the black and white strip. The colors, not surprisingly, tended to look very orange and green! With three strip, three various color strips overlapped the black & white strip...and resulted in vivid color. The only issues were that the movies required A LOT of lighting to create the picture look nice and not too dark. And, the colors in the earlier versions of this system tended to look very over-saturated--with colors so intense it almost looked better than true life!Sadly, I've seen few of these full-color Vitaphone movies and most of them are incredibly boring. They emphasized singing and dancing and the stories themselves were cute limp...and that is definitely real with "Okay, José"...a movie with lots of singing and dancing...but not very nice on either count. The storyline was also cute lame and the only thing I really liked about it was watching Ed Brendel pretending to be a cute blonde lady! This was cute cute...but that and the color alone are not enough to suggest it.
