Released 3/22/2007

Description: In exploring the lives of two wandering Nepali musicians, an uncle and nephew who share the same name and are featured in filmmaker Stephanie Spray's and Pacho Velez's acclaimed documentary Manakamana, Kāle and Kāle (pronounced kah-lay) exposes the rootless occupation of the Gaine caste and communicates both its joys and pitfalls - domestic, economic and spiritual - in their everyday lives. Rejecting didacticism as a means of ethnographical observation, the movie consists of distinct episodes that value the quality of the genuine moment. Spray couples both meaningful and disconcerting human interactions with the sights and sounds of natural familiarities such as grass, smoke, insects, animals, and traditional Nepalese folk music, opening up an evocative fresh globe that the viewer is invited to slowly and deliberately experience.

Released 6/1/2014

Description: A Minute Ago, which debuted this fall at High Art gallery in Paris, revolves around rotoscoping, the animation technique Rose calls “collaging in time and space.” Her most impressionistic work to date, the work takes its mission of departure from two pieces of footage: a YouTube video of a freak summer hailstorm on a Siberian beach, and a tour given by the architect Philip Johnson of his landmark Glass House in Fresh Canaan, Connecticut, just a several years before his death at age 98. “I was thinking about the relationship between shocking, catastrophic weather conditions and collage, which has a related uncanny, suturing quality,” Rose says. Accompanied partly by a down-pitched ver of Pink Floyd’s 1971 concert played “to the dead” at Pompeii, the work has an unsettling, morose quality.

When Alonzo Mourning’s no. 1 seed Georgetown Hoyas entered the tournament, they had their eyes set on the Final Four and a national title. Dealing with the likes of Ivy League winner and no. 16 seed Princeton was more of an afterthought. So when these two squads faced off on March 17, 1989, in Providence, Rhode Island, no one, not even Princeton, expected much of a game. They were all wrong. Pete Carril’s Tigers not only played one of the best minigames in college basketball history, they also allow the NCAA and the rest of the globe know that the mid-majors should enjoy and were here to stay. Without that game, the competition would not be what it is today — a billion-dollar enterprise that stops America for two weeks every year.
