Description: Since the dawn of history, folks have believed in the existence of some form of ghosts. THE TWILIGHT HOUR is an unsettling encounter with the Celtic ruins, foreboding estates and restless spirits that haunt the landscape of Ireland. This innovative documentary follows Sir Simon Marsden, the acclaimed photographer of the wonderful and the supernatural, as he immerses himself in the darkest corners of Ireland, many of them long uninhabited by living souls. His travels lead him to the country's most notorious properties, including Castle Leslie, where Sir John Leslie shares his ancestor's accounts of hauntings, as well as his own private encounters with ghosts. He wanders the creaking corridors of a long-forsaken mansion known as the most relentlessly haunted house in Ireland, and visits such weird and desolate spots as The Hill of the Witch in County Meath. The chilling effect has been described as "an atmospheric tour de force".

Stopforbud #

Released 12/17/1963

Description: Stop for Bud is Jørgen Leth's first movie and the first in his long collaboration with Ole John. […] they wanted to "blow up cinematic conventions and invent cinematic language from scratch". The jazz pianist Bud Powell moves around Copenhagen -- through King's Garden, along the quay at Kalkbrænderihavnen, across a waste dump. […] Bud is alone, accompanied only by his music. […] Photo and sound are two various things -- that's Leth's and John's principle. Dexter Gordon, the narrator, says stories about Powell's popular left hand. In an obituary for Powell, dated 3 August 1966, Leth wrote: "He quite willingly, or better still, unresistingly, mechanically, allow himself be directed. The movie attempts to depict his strange duality about his surroundings. His touch on the keys was like he was burning his fingers -- that's what it looked like, and that's how it sounded. But outside his playing, and often right in the middle of it, too, he was simply gone, not there."

Paradise #

Released 1/1/2009

Description: Paradise has been compared to a notebook, a diary and a sketchbook. It is a collection of discrete moments, unscripted and unstaged, shot digitally over few years, none lasting longer than four minutes. There is no voiceover or onscreen text to url or explain the fragments. These moments have tiny in common another than that they are all instants of beauty or happiness. While there is footage from nine various countries, the final section is centered on the US. There is tiny direct reference to 9/11 and the fights that followed, but those happenings – as Almeryeda puts it – “cast a shadow over the film.” If there is perhaps the faintest strain of melancholy in the film, it is because the movie can’t support but mission out that, unlike Paradise, these moments don’t last.

Naked States Reviews:

My partner and I decided to rent this flick when we discovered that Pecker was already out. We were in the mood for a 'light hearted comedy', but ended up with this documentary. Not a terrible choice. It was interesting to see the method in which Spencer Tunick chose to express himself--by encouraging others to be gratis and comfortable with their bodies. If you harbor inadequacies about your own, do not shy away from this, possibilities are, you will search somebody whose body is worse than yours. And don't worry about the title. It may look like you are renting a soft core, but it's really not much more than tan lines and pubes.

One of THE most delightful, entertaining and informative movies of an artist at work. Spencer Tunick travels to most of the United States to portray folks by one's, by ten's, by hundred's in their natural states.Instead of showing an artist in angst, this movie shows the artist at work and reveals the surprisingly satisfied result of his efforts on the folks he portrays. As far removed from Hollywood and movies about Jackson Pollock and Vincent Van Gogh and Michelangelo as Spencer's vision is from conventional notions about what art does and who it's for.Starts slow and tentative and builds to a glorious and satisfying ending. Nice pacing and direction place this on a straight track to documentary perfection.Especially surprising was the segment that reveals Spencer's troubles with --and distaste for.......NUDISTS! They're a true pain in the ass to work with.Nothing in the movie draws attention to the making of the film. There's no didacticism here, but by the end of the movie I was ready to take off my clothes and search Spencer.HBO showed it but if they don't present it again, search it and rent it..... the legacy of Woodstock come to small-town America.Although quiet and unassuming, Spencer's as bold as his topics when he goes up to total strangers and persuades them to undress for art's sake. And yes, he's been arrested, but never on a citizen complaint.....just by cops who can't stand the thought of folks not wearing clothes in public. Bravo, Spencer!

"Naked States" documents the photo-art odyssey of a boy and his quest to photograph folks and territories all over America with the centerpiece of every work being the naked human form of ordinary folks from individuals to scores. The movie looks at the artist and his vision, the folks who posed, the poignant beauty of the art, and the attitudes, opinions, and philosophies of ordinary folk regarding this compelling endeavor and artistic adventure. As much a study of human nature as of human form.
