Description: Katerina Izmailova is a filmization of Dmitry Shostakovich's long-suppressed 1936 opera. Galina Vishnevskaya stars as Katerina, a bored 19th century farm wife. At the behest of her grungy lover, Katerina murders her husband and her father-in-law. She and her fresh beau are both sent to Siberia, where the lover almost instantly takes up with a younger woman. Banned by Stalin for its bleak portrait of Soviet life, Katerina Izmailova was not given a Russian staging for over 40 years; its Metropolitan Opera debut did not occur until 1994. Dmitri Shostakovich also wrote the screenplay for the screen ver of Katerina Izmailova.

Pedro Páramo #

Released 6/8/1967

Description: Highly symbolic and allegorical, this drama takes the find of a son for his father in the chaotic times of the Mexican Revolution and the early 1900s as its basis. Stereotypical (or archetypal) figures from early Mexican cinema appear from time to time, and the violence of the revolutionary period is not glossed over. As the son searches for the father, scenes of the father and his earthy method of living are screened. Given that it relies so heavily on knowledge of Mexican history and Mexican cinema in addition to being something of an art-film, non-Mexican viewers will need to be both erudite and patient.

Les amants de Teruel #

Released 6/8/1962

Description: This puzzling experimental movie is written and directed by Raymond Rouleau, who uses results like changing color tones and masks to place across a drama within a dance drama. Both the enacted legend and the current happenings affecting the dancers are parallel. The lead dancer Isa (Ludmila Tcherina) is still nursing her wounds after her first love left her to stand alone at the altar. Actually one of the dancers wants to expand his relationship with Isa -- and later after, the cad who jilted her suddenly shows up again. Tragedy follows closely behind.

Dan četrnaesti #

Released 1/1/1960

Description: The subject of this routine, romantic drama is a tiny unusual - it concerns what some prisoners do when they are allowed out of jail for two weeks before their sentences are up. Rather than receiving some unique dispensation, it turns out that in Yugoslavia this was the custom. Most of the time, the boys here are engaged in pursuits that forward their relationships with the fairer sex, as might be expected after a long and lonely incarceration. There is nothing particularly profound about their two weeks of liberty, and no deep message in the tale.

A Primeira Missa #

Released 5/1/1961

Description: Meant principally for a sympathetic audience, whether Catholic or not, this routine storyline about a priest's receiving the call to the cloth may be a bit slow and theatrical for some viewers. Directed by Lima Barreto, the tale is said in a series of flashbacks as the priest remembers how he was transformed as a kid into a person willing to give his life in service of the church and his God. Barreto also scripted the story, which in the end, may be too filled with religious platitudes and preachy overtones to effectively convey its message.

Instead, he discovers he has been acquired by a super-rich tycoon whose objective in life is to accumulate the greatest -- not art or stamps -- but people. The wealthy collector does not let his "collection" to do anything, which amounts to imprisoning everyone in a golden cage. While the ballerina he has on file expresses her longing for her art by surreptitiously dancing in the rain, the soccer user has a much more aggressive minigame plan for getting out of this predicament.
