Produced by Warner Brothers as one of the extras to the DVD release of MR. SKEFFINGTON (1944), this short documentary has a tons of talking heads describing the origins and impact of the movie on its original release, as well as explaining how and why its appeal has lasted so long. Most of the comments are of the usual "it was nice working with ..." variety, coupled with references to Bette Davis's legendary penchant for dominating a set. Director Vincent Sherman's reminiscences are perhaps the most interesting, as he recalls how he forged an effective working relationship with the star, who frequently wanted to go her own way, yet listened to him when she understood that his recommendations might support to improve her performance on screen.
. . . abortion in all 50 American states dates to just 1973 probably assume that NO WOMEN had abortions in the 1940s. This was NOT the case, as the True Life drama BEHIND the making of MR. SKEFFINGTON in 1944 proves. So-called SKEFFINGTON "star" Bette "Big Eyes" Davis was NOTORIOUS in her day for having sex with each co-star and film director in sight. As is the situation with her screen double "Fanny Skeffington" in this flick, it made absolutely NO difference to Large Eyes whether she was married or not. As this website documents BY YEAR on Bette's biography and trivia pages, Bug Eyes was in the midst of AT LEAST six True Life abortions at the time she was portraying Fanny and canoodling the Bejeepers out of SKEFFINTON director Vincent Sherman (which Mr. Sherman alludes to here during MR. SKEFFINGTON: A PICTURE OF STRENGTH). When Bette's on-screen creation Fanny learns that she's pregnant during SKEFFINGTON, she says her husband that a fetus will leave her "all puffy and swollen and ugly." Ms. Davis slew AT LEAST SIX babies in order to create flicks such as SKEFFINGTON, yet NONE of the four talking heads here will touch this most salient mission about her movie endeavors with a ten-foot pole! How many of these tiny tykes were rubbed out because Mom and\or Dad were married to someone else as the gestation was initiated?! Was it the movie studio PR flacks, the U.S. Fight Department film censors, or BOTH who were ordering and funding all of these Crimes Vs Humanity? Perhaps the game of this DVD "Bonus Feature" could be MR. SKEFFINGTON: A PICTURE OF STENCH!
