I saw this movie in Montreal when it came out at some underground venue. I was in CEGEP Dawson College (New School) and a Greek girl in my circle of friend's brother was the filmmaker. The Trio soundtrack was the excellent accompaniment to this bizarre movie about an unusual relationship between mother and son. It had camp and style and I think did touch on true problems albeit in an unusual way. It had this flavour of discomfort and embarrassment, like What's eating Gilbert Grape...and the campiness of a B-flick.I still remember specific scenes and was just saying my partner about one of them after he revealed a weird genital flesh eating dream. What happened to Demitri?
21 years ago the movie was irritating, painful and even embarrassing to watch. Upon a newest re-screening of the movie I have found that time has been very type to it. In fact it is a entire various and competent movie in the year 2005. In 1984 it was something stuck in the twilight between John Waters "in terrible taste", and art-house gay European cinema that was in its heyday during the early to mid 1980's, throw in a bit of the Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey, Factory NYC underground "Super Star" system of casting with regards to Esther Vargas, "Mother's Meat" female lead. Actually the movie stands on it own with some time and distance form those another schools of gender cinema. "Mother's Meat& Freud's Flesh" number 3 fanatic and its director, Demetri Estdelacropolis
Back in 1984 when I was attending CEGEP at Dawson Collage in Montreal,I had the pleasure of taking a course titled Movie Nouveau taught by Mr. Kazoom. It was there that I got to view Mother's meat and meet with the director. The movie itself at first viewing was not that impressive and I found that it was evident that this was an art movie by a first time director who was eager to display all his known filming techniques. Now 16 years soon it has occurred to me that the film, unlike so many another movies that I have seen is still quite memorable, the scenes where the fish is placed on the table and the dining room stage are still new in my mind today. If you are the type of person who enjoys art movies then I suggest this movie to you;there are many parts of the movie that escape my memory, but the fact that many scenes are still crisp in my mind that one has to admit that the director did indeed make art on movie and for this he could be proud.I hope to see this movie again if the occasion ever arises again.
