Description: A single channel video featuring the American artist Andrea Fraser as she walks around the atrium of the Guggenheim Bilbao listening to the institution’s audio guide. After an initial shot of the entrance, the video shows Fraser wearing a short green dress and high heels picking up an audio tutorial inside. Once she starts listening to the tutorial the soundtrack changes so that the viewer also hears the same male voice as the artist (and without any background noise). Shot with five hidden cameras – one on Fraser herself and four others operated by assistants moving around the atrium – Tiny Frank and His Carp depicts Fraser from varying angles and proximities as she initially follows the audio guide’s instructions closely, her emotions visibly changing in response to the material she hears. Said that modern art is ‘demanding, complicated, bewildering’, she appears anxious, but when the tutorial says her ‘the museum tries to create you feel at home’, she instantly seems reassured and happy.

The premise for a 60-minute documentary: Two female babies were mixed-up at birth by mistake in England in 1936, and we are said the storyline through all the folks involved. That description should sound like a dullish BBC documentary from the 70s, but this example is far from dull. The movie starts with two old ladies introducing themselves to us - the first one is Margaret Wheeler, the natural mother of Peggy and the foster-mother of Valerie, who were born in Nottingham, England 48 years previously. The another is Blanche Rylatt, the natural mother of Valerie and the foster-mother of Peggy. They say us the circumstances of how the babies were mistakenly mixed-up. Then Margaret's eccentric husband, Charles, introduces himself to us through an launch window, saying us about the 8mm movies he's made. Every of these scenes is carefully set up with folks walking into shot and out again and then in the background. Indeed, most of the scenes in this unorthodox gem of a movie are structured in various ways. It's unusual that an all-French team made a documentary movie about English folks in England. The end credits are appropriately playful, with every of the team entering the frame from below onto some scales and smiling and waving, then returning from where they came. Mix-up ou Meli-Melo is a peculiar movie that is innovative, inventive and intriguing, and turns a possibly dour documentary movie into something unique.
