Mine had its Globe Premiere at Austin's SXSW Movie Festival where it was very enthusiastically received. Mine compliments the many fine movies that have been made about the tragedy of Fresh Orleans and Hurricane Katrina. Whereas a movie like Spike Lee's remarkable film, When the Levees Broke provides a broad acc of the flood, Mine focuses in a single and often overlooked aspect of the tragedy: the fate of the house pets particularly the dogs left behind in Fresh Orleans, because the owners weren't allowed to evacuate with them. Mine is beautifully and lovingly filmed. It introduces us to a series of various pet owners and says of their struggles to recover their dogs, who are really members of their extended family. The importance of pets to people's lives is explored and we see the heroic efforts of the animal lovers who test to rescue the pets and reunite them with their owners.Through this lens of the lost pets of Fresh Orleans we see many of the social divisions of American society enjoy out as Fresh Orleanians, often with very limited means, attempt to recover their beloved lost pets. Some are even forced to file lawsuits in an attempt to recover their lost "property." This movie could be widely viewed as our country attempts to grapple with the infinitely complex and continuing social consequences of the man-made tragedy of Fresh Orleans. Perhaps this deeply private angle will launch the eyes of some Americans to the deep and unending private devastation caused by our government's response to this long-anticipated disaster. This beautiful, inspiring movie deserves to be widely seen.
That's the opening line from Mine" which had me in tears within the first several mins of viewing and I wasn't now sure I'd be able to watch it through as I sat cuddled up with my giant dog and a cat.Really well done documentary, the utter frustration and sadness really comes through. You also receive all sides of this nightmare; the original owners, the fresh owners, the dog rescuers, the dogs themselves. This focuses on about 4 victims of hurricane Katrina trying (for years) to receive their dogs back. There are a couple of satisfied endings, a bit of heartbreak If nothing else I hope Katrina changes evacuation disclaimers in the future, this can never be allowed to happen again. 01/13
