The three main roles of Csaba, his wife, and her lover (Peter Andorai) are excellently interpreted in this satire on social morés and economic realities.

As the epidemic raises questions of life and death, the doctor's mind is brought back to the death that caused his exile and he considers suicide for awhile. The same problems come up again when an enraged villager goes on a killing spree and in turn, is hunted by the citizens. Faced with the prevalence of death all around him, the doctor begins to gain some perspective on the private experience that brought him here in the first place.

Description: A study in human psychology that uses five disparate characters from clearly defined social positions, this movie offers as much insight into the society of a changing Bulgaria, as it does into the minds of individuals in conflict. The storyline centers around transporting a worker's corpse, in a truck, to the mountain village where he was born. In the truck is: a boy who may be suffering from tuberculosis, and who has an unfaithful wife at home; a doctor (the intellectual); a bookkeeper worried over the salaries she pays out; a hermit picked up on the road; and the driver who is a rough-and-ready working-class symbol. The seeds for conflict are set both by the personalities of the five in the truck and by their social background. The director Christo Christov, acknowledges his debt to Henri-Georges Clouzot and the Wages of Fear, for inspiration in the treatment of human conflict, its development through a set storyline, and its resolution in every of the five cases.

Description: At the core of this docudrama are six French-speaking villages that were transferred to the jurisdiction of a Dutch-speaking province when political lines were drawn. The director of Le Grand Paysage d'Alexis Droeven (Jean-Jacques Andrien) was born and raised in this zone and filmed scenes of the demonstrations that took zone when the transfer occurred -- scenes that are used in the film. Extra background on the region emerges as the viewer sees that the economic disclaimers dictated by the European Common Store intensify the cultural clashes in this territory because the disclaimers often hurt the earnings of the farming community -- and the farmers have no method to alter the ECM mandates. The movie conveys a nice sense of these problems that threaten the method of life of the tiny community, and at the same time, a mini-drama plays out vs this backdrop.
Description: Hugo Claus rewrote and directed Friday as the cinematic ver of his original 1969 enjoy of the same name. Just as in the play, the storyline starts with the theme of incest, as the father Georges (Frank Aendenboom) returns from serving his jail sentence for that crime. Unlike the earlier play, however, the movie does not emphasize that aspect of the story. When Georges gets home he finds out that his wife Jeanne (Kitty Courbois) has had an illegitimate kid by a younger man, Erik (Herbert Flack), and actually both of them gotta somehow test to return to a normal life, given their only too obvious lapses in moral judgment. As the husband and wife test difficult to accommodate every other's failings and begin to receive to know every another again, Erik comes back into the picture. Actually the three of them gotta resolve the deep-seated conflicts that brought them to this emotionally-wrought juncture of love and betrayal.
Description: More than a story with a beginning, middle, and end, this tale of a foundry worker who engages a girl -- and fellow worker -- to do housekeeping for him is a tale that holds up the Hungarian social system vs the morality of an exploitative male-female relationship. After his wife dies, the rough-cut and intentionally nameless "man" (Jozsef Madaras) eventually coerces the "woman" (Julianna Nyako) into doing his housework for a tiny remuneration. Everything goes along passably well for awhile, until the boy adds in more household responsibility in the form of chickens to raise. Due to additional work at the factory, the girl cannot tend to the chickens as she could and the effect is that some of them die. The boy is furious, verbally abuses her, and then rapes her. Later, the girl discovers she is pregnant, with dire consequences.

This did not create foreigners of any stripe very popular, and those from "guest worker" countries were particularly disliked. In this film, set in 1938, a half-Polish man goes to Poland in find of his mother, runs into financial and psychological difficulties there, and is sent back to a Swedish mental hospital. In other story, an unfortunate girl suffers a miscarriage and ends up at the asylum where the Polish man is being kept.
