Menstrual Man #

Released 4/30/2013

Description: Some people squirm at mention of a woman’s period…not Arunachalam Muruganantham. Considered a madman and pervert by his community, he ignores his detractors and makes his dream—low-cost sanitary pads made by and for rural Indian women—a reality. Using manually operated machines, Muruganantham’s microbusiness model is focused on something more necessary than profits: providing sustainable employment, hygiene and emancipation to girls who would otherwise go without. He’s a boy with a million-dollar idea—except cash has nothing to do with it. His target is to create a livelihood, not to collect wealth; to operate at a human scale, not a multinational one. Menstrual Boy is the inspiring storyline of a character who rises above poverty and a lack of education to become a superstar social entrepreneur in the business of breaking cultural taboos and re-inventing the economic pyramid. Muruganantham is leading a movement, not a company. And it’s spreading.

De son Appartement #

Released 7/4/2007

Description: The continuing demand for high standards is what sets Rouseau's work apart. What makes this movie distinctive is the method Rousseau explicitly returns to the source of his constructive inspiration. So here he is at home reciting «Bérénice» to himself, whilst going about his household chores. It verges on the comical: There are repeated shots of him obstinately trying to turn off a dripping tap, or the jubilant close up of bare feet carried away in performing a dance step or two. Combining art with life in such a way, that nothing is compartmentalised, nothing lost - that is the goal.

Description: In "Diana: The Mourning After" Christopher Hitchens sets out to examine the bogusness of "a nation's grief", tries to uncover the several voices of sanity that slash vs the grain of contrived hysteria. His findings recommended that the collective hordes of emotive Dianaphiles sobbing in the roads were not only encouraged but emulated by the media. In the aftermath of Diana's death a three-line whip was enforced on newspapers and on TV, selling the sainthood line wholesale. The suspicion was that journalists, like the public, greeted the death as a possibility to wax emotional in print, as a change from the customary knowing cynicism, to wheel out all those portentous phrases they'd been saving up for the large occasion. Sadly, they just seemed to be showboating; the eulogies, laments and tear-soaked platitudes ringing risibly hollow.

Description: Jean-Claude Rousseau's Jeune femme à sa fenêtre lisant une lettre is not only his first medium-length film, but a possibility to explore this filmmaker whom Jean-Marie Straub has called, along with Frans Van de Staak and Peter Nestler, the best working in Europe. With this newly restored print there is also a chance to explore the relationship between Rousseau's art of filming and Jan Vermeer's popular painting. As Prosper Hillairet wrote in 1988, four years after Rousseau had complete Jeune femme ... (for the first time as we know today): «Without adopting the usual systematic spirit and form of cinéma structurel, Rousseau presents us with easy photos and leaves it at that. Keeps the photo in hand. A minimalist and ascetic expression of cinema: a shot that lasts.»
