Just watched this Snub Pollard short on the "American Slapstick 2" disc. Pollard is challenged to a war by a boxer. I'll just actually tell this was quite a funny short produced and directed by Hal Roach. There's also a woman but she seems quite shallow in this one...
Walrus-moustached funnyman Snub Pollard plays The Dandy in this Hal Roach one-reeler. Whilst wooing his woman one night, Snub is instructed to transport along by a policeman, and as a effect runs into egotistical prize warrior Hard-Headed Haggerty, who, upon seeing Snub's bankroll, plots to separate a fool from his cash with a wager: if he'll war Haggerty in the ring, he'll take a fall and everyone will come out ahead. Naturally, things don't work out quite as intended, and the intervention of a six-gun totin' cowpoke only adds other layer of complexity to the plan. Pollard is basically forgotten these days, but like Larry Semon, was a talented, physically adept, and visually unforgettable comic. He's everytime fun to watch, irregardless of the quality of the film.
This movie was included in the "American Slapstick" DVD set. I have seen two or three dozen of Australian comedian Snub Pollard's movies and this one is about average to slightly below average. Part of this isn't Pollard's fault as this only existent copy appears to be missing bits and pieces.Snub plays a rich guy who wants to impress the ladies with his virility. So he pays a tough boxer to take a dive in a staged fight, though the war definitely does not go anything like expected. Plus, the concept of skinny and low looking Snub as a boxer is cute funny as Chaplin or Harold Lloyd looked absolutely macho compared to him! An interesting movie that is sure to please silent comedy fans, though others might search it slow going.
