For the most part, I enjoyed Jimmy Kimmel's take on having two Norman Lear shows-"All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons"-and having actual actors portraying those iconic characters though no one can replace the originals, that's for sure! Marisa Tomei came off greatest with her Edith Bunker sounding quite like a Queens woman. Woody Harrelson wasn't as nice doing Archie Bunker though maybe I'm too used to Carroll O'Connor's characterization. Jamie Foxx is nice at impersonating Sherman Hemsley for his George Jefferson but since he's not quite Sherman's size, his tallness doesn't really do the hero justice. But really, does anyone really expect anything more concerning any of the another actors testing these iconic characters? That's why at least it's a true treat seeing Marla Gibbs reprising in the role that made her career: eventual Jefferson's maid Florence Johnston. She still does those lines justice especially her last one at the end of her ep. Also liked Jennifer Hudson's ver of "Movin' On Up", ditto Harrelson and Tomei's take on "Those Were the Days" especially the latter's screeching at the end! So on that note, I really enjoyed this ver of Lear's shows and what a treat to see him intro this unique from Archie's chair! P.S. What a treat to see Ms. Gibbs reunited with her "227" co-star Jackee Harry here!
This was genius!!! A total delight to watch, pop culture at its absolute finest with stellar performances by all. Marisa Tomei nailed the hero of Edith with poise and grace. This is a real gem!
At Norman Lear's shows place a mirror up to daily Americans and exposed us, warts and all, though we didn't everytime recognize ourselves. I right, am female, small-town, mid-west born and raised smack dab in the middle of the Civil Rights and Women's Liberation movements. My dad epitomized Archie Bunker. Had his chair that no one else ever sat in, and jokingly referred to mom as "Dingbat." She wasn't amused. By the time "All in the Family" ceded to "Archie Bunker's Place" my dad, finally seeing bits of himself in Archie, no longer found the hero funny or justified in his bigotry. He stopped referencing folks of various ethnicities with the daily slang he'd grown up with which denigrated them into second class citizens, and instead recognized their equality to him and his family. They weren't stealing jobs or coming to attack the womenfolk (who were clearly demonstrating they should fend for themselves cute well)...these were hardworking daily Joes just like him just trying to do what was right, take care of their families, and stand up and be counted. And as the broadcast demonstrated, so many of the divisive problems of 50 years ago remain. The content stands the use of time. The acting? Well, these characters were written to be larger than life so some exaggeration is to be expected and not everyone can rise to the lvl of the original cast. But these are stories worth saying because we have to be reminded that no matter how far we've come, some things never change...and some things do, like my Dad.
