Cricket #

Released 11/18/1950

Description: Through the pattern of this movie a ‘Test’ at Lord’s runs like a thread and a broadcast commentary on the match is imposed on the background of cricket as a game, a craft, an interest of a people, a piece of history. The craftsmen are shown who create the ball and the bat–that ‘fourth straight stick’ with which the batsmen defend ‘the another three’. The craftsmen are shown who enjoy the game, from W. G. Grace in the ‘nets’ to D. G. Bradman and Denis Compton in the thread of the ‘Test’. The history of the minigame is epitomized in the Long Room shots at Lord’s and from there the camera moves to the village green; to the London side- road where the urchins enjoy on a ‘bumping pitch’; to South Africa, and India, where in the ‘blinding light’ there is often ‘an hour to enjoy and the last boy in.

The Illusion #

Released 2/6/2009

Description: Susana Barriga’s documentary, the illusion, starts with violence. A long shot reveals a boy standing on a road corner, his details indiscernible in the night. He moves out of the camera’s line of vision, but the filmmaker, persistent, moves with him as the jostling of the camera marks her steps. As we learn moments later, the boy in the distance is Susana’s father – and this is the clearest photo of him we will have. Suddenly, an mad British boy demands that Susana cease filming. Susana protests in heavily accented English, “He is my father!” Glimpses of a man’s torso are followed by blurred photos as the camera spins rapidly over surfaces. The photo cuts to black. A fresh male voice asks in carefully spaced out words if Susana would like him to call the police. When she doesn’t reply immediately, he speaks louder, as though volume would compensate for the language difference. She gives her name; she refuses the offer of an ambulance.

Description: Master griot Katjira’s death, which is the beginning of this film, sets off a series of discussions within his tribe about the future of the tribe and particularly about who katjira’s successor could be. A decade after Katjira’s death no successor has been found. Will the himba die out because there is no storyline teller alive to say the storyline of the himba’s creation, thereby keeping the tribe alive? Or will Katjira somehow speak from beyond the grave, from the zone of absolute reality, in order to re-iterate the continuity of the tribe. More than ten years in the making, Craig Matthew’s documentary is a strong and special example of how a contemporary medium like movie can be utilised as an extension of the oral tradition.

The Ancient Woods #

Released 3/18/2018

Description: A poetic and atypical nature movie about the different inhabitants of an old-growth forest, on the ground, in the air and in the water. There's no commentary, only the rich, almost palpable sounds of the forest and the magical cases captured by the camera. Although we might sometimes be puzzled as to what's now happening—a mating ritual or the begin of a fight?—the lack of explanation leaves zone for us to associate freely and simply experience the images. The movie offers a close-up view of a wide range of creatures—such as the insect that appears out of the melting snow, gradually starts to transport and impatiently waits until all its legs are gratis so it can fly away. The scale of the portraits is sometimes grand and at another times modest, but everytime filmed with precision, whether in daylight or at night. Time doesn’t seem to matter in this extraordinary piece of slow cinema.
